Anyone here grow bamboo?

I live in zone 7 and have a couple acres in back of my house. I would like to try some of that giant bamboo. I would like to build fencing and practice building stuff with it.

What's the best way to buy it? Ship it? In buckets as young plants?

Any reputable dealer to buy from?

I would not do it. It will infest your property. It is incredibly difficult to remove. Only plant it if you want to be assimilated. You have been warned.

Yeah...I have read how badly it spreads and takes over property but that is partly the reason i want it, to create a large privacy barrier back there.

Heck I will poison it out if it gets out of control...LOL.

poisoning it will result in you not being able to grow anything on that land again. if you're trying to grow pot... grow it in tree tops, climb up a tree and create a soil compartment from a bucket or something and grow your weed in trees.. works great, helicopter raids never find that shit

Except when your neighbors notice you climbing the tree in your backyard every day...

Everyone has something cute to say but noone has answered my question.

BTW...I know how to grow pot and hide it without all the extravagance of bamboo...LOL

Absolutely...helped a friend try to remove it after his neighbor's bamboo started growing into his yard. It's a major PITA....he can almost literally watch it grow. Can grow 1+ feet a day.

If you really want to do it, find someone that has it in their backyard and ask if you can dig some up.

Can't find the giant type anywhere around here. All they have here is the kind to make fishing poles out of.

I'm not sure where you can get any but I've been told you can control bamboo very easily by putting in a rubber barrier under the ground around the area you want it to grow. You don't have to close off the bottom just a line wall all the way around about 1 or 2 ft down. It works b/c bamboo spreads by runners and once it hits that wall it can't go past it. I've never personally tried it but my Uncle told me this and he has quite a bit of landscape/water garden expirence.

Yeah...I have been studying/preparing to grow these. This (rubber barrier) is what I will do around the perimeter of the growing area. The nice folk here at ATOT are just convinced that I don't need to even attempt it though...LOL

I would be careful with the bamboo. yes the rubber should stop it from spreading from where you do not want it. BUT if it gets into a neighbors yard they can sue you for the cost to remove it.

That crap spreads like wildfire.

Ok, sorry for the thread stealing, but I don't know wtf is up with bamboo and pot? This is the first I've heard of it.

find an unfortunate home owner who made the mistake of planting it and ask if you can take some, I sure they wont say no...

Hell you could have some of ours, but I don't think its "Giant". At least I'm glad I can say I'm not the one who planted it.

rofl.

Best of luck to you. For 2 years, the neighbor thought it looked nice. For 2 more years, my parents agreed and it moved along the property line into our yard. For the following 30 years, my mother has been mowing her lawn. For 30 years, the bamboo doesn't care. It's still there mixed in with the grass.

Doesn't it also spread, in addition to runners, by also seeding itself? And, if I recall correctly, if the ground sees bamboo near itself, it magically sprouts another bamboo plant.

Also, if there are 100 bamboo plants in your yard and you attempt to kill them off with chemicals, they wait for their chance - the moment you're distracted by pausing to wipe the sweat from your brow, one of them runs around you and replants itself in a safe spot. The next day, it reproduces itself in 150 places just to show you who's boss.

For what it's worth, I learned this lesson trying to get rid of some sumac trees. We had about 40 of them when we moved into this house. I pulled out most of them, the trees responded by saying "f you" and sprouted about 400 trees. At the beginning of this year, my boys and I had a rule: 10 trees a day, apiece. I have 2 boys. Do the math to figure out how many remained after 2 weeks. Wrong. There were 800 two weeks later. Bamboo does the same thing.

I assume you understand there are two different kinds of bamboo, Clumping and Running.

With Clumping you'll get a stand about 8 ft. across and no more.
