anyone here goes to UCSD? (me now = SD map freak)

a friend of mine just got accepted to UCSD, and he will be arriving to LA tomorrow. He need to find an apartment there and I will try to help him as much as possible. However, I don't know anything about San Diego, let alone La Hoya.
So where can I find an apartment close to the campus, and what to do around there (ie, nightlife and bars and whatnot)

any hints or tips would be appreciated.

EDIT, muhahahahah... I just got back from SD and I now possess UCSD supreme logisitic skills... I know where/how to get from SD to La Jolla to Airport to Convoy to GasLamp to the Coco's resturant behind Regent Court. Me = ownz!! 🙂 hahah

anyway, my friend decide to rent a place called Costa Verdes, 2 bedroom, 1100 square feet, 1500 per month. i think it is a pretty good deal, but the trouble is finding a co-signer or having enough deposit. (they want 18,000 in the bank statement, ouch.)

Contact the university. They have a housing assistance program.
there is no shortage of people near about to help on the night life but, horton plaza is a start. La Jolla.😉

La Jolla, not La Hoya. Also, what isn't there to do around San Diego? It has everything, including one of the most perfect climates in the continental United States. Plenty of hot babes, too. Have him get a place on Mission Beach.

la jolla is an expensive place to live. he could find cheaper a little further from campus. tell him to go to www.sdreader.com and he can look at the classifieds from down here and try to find a place.

as for night life, there are plenty of bars/clubs in pacific beach, specifically garnet ave, and that is fairly close to la jolla.

"one of the most perfect climates in the continental United States"

soooo true, only there aren't really 'seasons' there which is kind of a shock at first

no seasons? you're saying that getting down to 60 degrees in winter doesn't count as a seasonal change? its true, its usually 65-85 the entire year.

just got accepted as a freshman, or as a transfer? if he's under 21, then there isn't that much of a nightlife. i guess he could always go down to Tijuana, where drinking age is 18.
if he's serious about his studies, i would advise him staying in Mission Beach area, or any other areas like Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, etc. there are WAY too many distractions in those areas. when i lived in Pacific Beach, all i did was go surfing and go to parties. traffic is a big issue in San Diego, and although more expensive, i would put him in one of many apartments near the campus (known as UTC area). parking is next to impossible to find on campus (and expensive), and it makes much more sense to take advantage of free shuttle service that services the nearby off-campus apartments. finding a roommate shouldn't be hard at all, and it will bring down the high living cost of these apartments. like someone said, try the housing assistance program. oh, and in case i didn't mention it already, traffic is a big problem in San Diego. DO NOT try to commute to school.

okay, here's some more info,
my friend doesn't have a car, so living near campus is pretty much a must. (so that also kinda boil down the choices to the "UTC" area) meanwhile, he is over 21, so he will drink, party, puke and all the college good stuffs.

anyway, here's another problem, I DO NOT know the directions to all the spots in La Jolla...

UC SD map

so where is the UTC area? where is the Pacific Beach and (ah I JUST found it, south of campus right?) ? (in reference to that map)

haha, theres room for oen more in my apt , but then i saw that he will drink, party, puke...ehhh....its ok 🙂

gwlam12: nah, I was kidding, he doesn't drink (excessively) so he would actually be a very mellow person to be roomate with. either way, you don't want an excessively quiet and introverted roomate right? he's a cool guy, i guarantee (well, english maybe his second language, but he can speak it without trouble.)

yes, Pacific Beach is to the south...just a couple exits on the 5. UTC is pretty much right to the east of ucsd. if you look on that map you linked to there is a purple rectangle to the south east of campus on the corner of genessee and la jolla village drive, that is a mall called University Town Center.

while Pacific Beach may be only a couple of exits to the south, you have to drive quite a distance towards the beach before you find the apartments. i lived there before, and the traffic out of Garnet exit is HORRIBLE. there's pretty much only one way to get in and out of PB (via freeway) and it typically took me over 40 minutes in the morning hours to get to school. (and 40 minutes in the evening to get home)

like you mentioned, UTC is the purple area to the right of the map. the other purple area is La Jolla Village Square, and it's another shopping area. it also has 2 different movie complexes in that area.

is it still possible to get on campus housing? i'm a transfer student going to john muir. they say i can get on the waitlist and see what happens; but honestly, what are the chances of me getting a place to stay at school? i dont care what the conditions are as long as I get my own room.
