Yeah, I didn't think that CIS was going to emphasize programming much either, but you need at least 4 classes now to complete the degree.
I've actually spoken in length with one of my professors who is on the curriculum board about this, b/c I really think it's ridiculuous (I
despise programming). He explained that b/c so many JMU students get jobs in the NOVA/DC area, especially in software development/consulting, they structure the curriculum based on what employers are looking for.
However, I
think they're planning on seperating the CIS degree into 2 concentrations -- one for software dev(programming) and they other emphasizing more networking aspects. I'm sure that would be more admin/managerial aspects. Unfortunately, I won't be around to see it.
Other than that, what I would have done differently in hindsight would be to simply minor in CIS, and take the 3 or 4 electives that I really enjoyed and 1 or 2 programming courses (just to understand the concepts), and majored in Finance.
It is a good program though overall, and you would have at least 2 years before you get into CIS courses, so by that time it is likely they will have adjusted the curriculum.
