anyone get motion sickness playing 3d shooter games (e.g. q3 or UT)? i can't play more then 10 minutes w/o feeling nauseous.

my refresh is at 75 or higher.

I only get motion sickness if I'm watching someone else play. As long as I'm at the helm I can play non stop for hours ;o).

I don't get sick playing Unreal tournament, but I do on other games.

The regular "unreal" gives me "motion sickness" after playing it a while. I also remember when I played games like "Doom " and and "Hexen".....I would.

Seem some people get it...and not others. (sick..that is)

You really should be playing at 85 or higher.
I used to play @ 800x600 @ 100hz, but the eye candy of the Radeon @ 1024x768 is just too unbareable, even though I gotta set the refresh rate back to 85 :\

yes but only for the first few time
afterward i get motion sickness
it can be a new game or old game.(quake2 or half life)
if i stop play the game for a week or two. then play again, i get motion sickness

i get motion sickness playing most first person shooter games (looking at 3dmark benchmark even gives me motion sickness). i usually can play car games like NFS w/o problem.

yeah i'd run at 85 or higher but my monitor is not too good. 85 at 1024 max.

In quake you can remove the "bob and weave" feature so your view remains constant while running.

Yeah, I remember getting motion sick a lot whilst playing Doom I/II. I didn't get it with any other game (well, perhaps the games based on the Doom engine, but I didn't play those). It was so bad that I had to puke once. 🙁

Does anyone have a rational explenation for this ?

I get sick playing single player... that's probably why I only play multiplayer games 🙂
Don't really get sick.. just makes me feel like crap for several hours... 🙁

I think people get motion sickness more when the games stutter. Just like when I use to play UT on my Matrox G400. I would feel like throwing up after a couple minutes but not on my Radeon. And games like Tactical-Ops or CS would give me motion sickness if I play. So as long as the game run smoothly than it won't be a problem.

I do .. at night .. when the monitor is the only light-source in the room. No prob if played during daylight hours. The more often I play, the less it affects me.

hmm i don't get motion sickness playing or watching others play... what amy be the cause of motion sickness in such cases?

I feel privileged not having any motion sickness for any 3D games after reading all of your unfortunes. I play Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex and NFS, never know what it feels like.

i think the motion sickness is caused by the SPEED of the game.....
in worlf3d, doom, and quake my motion sickness was really bad when playing single player... when i do multiplayer (speed of the game is a lil slower), everything was fine....same thing with counterstrike...i never get sick playin over the internet, but after playin or watchin someone else for 5-10 mins, i start to get sick....

all this time i thought i was alone on this, but i guess theres lots of people still in the closet....haha....
my friends always make fun of me cuz of this

The actual motion sickness is caused from the motion felt in your inner ear and the motion in your eyes not matching up. When playing a 3d game your eyes see alot of motion like you were running around. Your inner ear doesn't feel a thing so the confusion of your eyes and inner ear make you feel ready to hurl. Some people are more sensitive to this than others. Alot of people get it for the same reason if they read in the car. Your inner ear feels motion but your eyes are fixed on the page.

Good topic! I've noticed this in FPS type games....namely Q3 and realMyst3D. UT gives me no problems though. I'm thinking the motion sickness might have to do with choppiness in some games as I've never noticed it in games when my frame rate was high. The fact I'm running a Voodoo3 (still) and am fine with most Glide games is what has me thinking in terms of frame rate.

The only game that ever had this effect on me was Descent 3. High speed flipping and rolling completely freaked me out, I had a headache and motion sickness after about half an hour...

As a bona-fide MD here's what I suggest. First of all, play with the lights on. Secondly, if you are having a real problem go to the drug store and get either scopolamine or antivert - both are meds which help to stabilize the inner ear. They are pretty harmless drugs. Try it with that a few times and you should be able to condition yourself and then be ok without them.

the only time i get dizzy is when i use wall cheat (idnoclip) in doom1/2 and walk thru the walls... its kinda freaky 🙂 but no its still far from a motion sickness...
