I'm in the interview stage of a job application in Corbin, Kentucky at a newspaper called the corbin times-tribune. Anyone heard of either this town or that newspapers? If so, what is there/what's to do in the surrounding area? How is the cost of living?

TIA.

I'm in KY, and have to go to Corbin every few weeks to work on computers at the extended campus for Eastern Kentucky University there

it's an OK town, kinda small.... about an hour and a half from Lexington (if you drive 85-90 on the interstate like i do) and 2 and a half hours from Louisville

i have a friend or 2 who grew up there, and they didn't stay any longer than they had to

Cool. I've never been there. Hey, I bet they have good fried chicken! But I wouldn't know. It's not kosher.

i still think it's funny that people give kentucky such a bum rap about the whole incest thing and no shoes and no teeth and all that... IMHO west virginia and parts of tennessee seem to live up to that stereotype better

a friend of mine wanted to get out of KY really bad, was just sick of it (i know the feeling, i've been like that too) but he travelled a bit and came up wth this (forgive him, he's kind of a hippie, and a bad speller):

"While in the Rockies I met this guy who said that KY was the most wonderfun "Natural" state he had ever been to. This made me revisit my thoughts about KY. Now i have come to realize that it truely is one of the most wonderful places in the world. There is a reason the the Indians would not live here, they knew that they would taint it. The climate is one that can harbor almost any sort of wildlife and can grow more herbs and medicines than any other place in the USA!!!"

the poverty/incest wouldn't bother me, in fact it would probably make a good photo story. I'm just worried about meeting people and having stuff to do. Do you know if they have high speed net access down there?

Even though I'm "temporarily" in Texas, SE Kentucky is where I'm from. I was back there for a visit earlier this year.

Corbin isn't too bad. I-75 is right there. It's in a dry county, so you'll travel for some alcohol. The cost of living is actually quite inexpensive, depending upon where you look. I know it has gone up some since NCS-Pearson opened up a data center. EKU has an extension campus there as well.

What's to do in the surrounding area? Well, Richmond is about 50 miles up I-75; Lexington, about 30 miles beyond that. Knoxville lies 80 miles to the south. There's lot's of hunting and fishing in the area. Plenty of live music, depending upon the time of year. Renfro Valley is just up the road and they have a dynamite Bluegrass festival. Cumberland Falls and Lake Cumberland aren't too far. But most important, I think you'll find the quality of people, in regards to their respective honesty and genuine character, among the best in the world.

Also note that Corbin has had a bad rap in the past as being somewhat "unfriendly" towards African-Americans. That too has changed, or so I understand.

Personally, from reading some of your views and opinions here, I think you would do quite well with the local paper in Corbin. They could use some fresh blood, as could most of the local papers in that part of KY. Just see the editor before becoming "too" controversial. ;) And remember, the Big Blue Football and Basketball machines rule that part of the state.

woodchuckcharlie is from Richmond and he could prolly shed some more light on the surrounding area. I moved out after one year of college and joined the Army. Plan on returning in a couple of years though.

its dry? WTF...

That's some good information though, thanks for sharing. The pay for the paper is pretty crappy-starts at $18,700, but from some listings online it looks like I could scrape a 1-3 bedroom house/apt for $250-$400/month, which would balance the crappy pay out somewhat.

most of KY is dry, and it pisses me off to no end... mainly because there's supposed to be seperation of church and state and all that, but the reason the counties stay dry is the churches!! damn blue book laws or whatever...

anyway, check out the wet/moist/split/whatever/dry stuff here

Cost of living is cheap. I recruited back there, Middlesboro and Harlan, from 88-90. Paid $200 a month for a 2 bedroom wooden house with electric heat. I know it hasn't gone up much because my ex-old lady only pays about $400 per month for a three bedroom house.

Stay away from coal heating, if possible. Sure, it's cheap, but also a pain in the rearend, depending upon your stove. I mined that stuff for a while.

Yeah, it is dry. There are "bootleggers" around though. And if you are into local journalism, you'll get to know them. They are the ones who stock up on beer, wine, hard liqour. Best to run up to Richmond (Can't remember if London is still dry or not) and fill up. Seeing as I'm originally from Middlesboro, we went to Knoxville quite often for anything but beer. You can drive down to Claiborne County, TN through the Cumberland Gap on 25E for beer and wine. Ewing, Virginia is right there as well. Very, very beautiful down there. You can also drive out to Cumberland in Harlan County for alcohol, if you like.

And, if you aren't married or attached, you'll certainly find you a good one down there.

Personally, if I wasn't married, or my wife wasn't a damn Texan, I'd be back there tomorrow.

I've been to Kentucky once and I noticed that you could see a 5-legged calf for a nickel. That's a pretty good deal!

Don't know much about Corbin, I live in Louisville. The cost of living in Kentucky is very reasonable, of course it also depends on where you live within the state. Here in Louisville $150k would buy you a very nice house. I hear that Lexington is more expensive, but can't confirm. As for the alcohol, it's true about 80% of the state is dry, thanks to the religious right. Actually, I was told by some older local folks that most counties dry laws were lobbied by bootleggers back in 1920's and 30's; dunno if it's true, after all Kentucky is a home to more distilleries then any other state.

One thing I find extremely annoying, Kentucky is a handful of states which enforces Internet purchase tax, meaning if you buy from large companies like Dell, Amazon etc, you will be subject to a 6% tax. In addition to that, Kentucky's own income tax form has a section that requires you to report all online purchases you made that you weren't charged tax for, say if you purchased from Newegg.

Hope this helps.

Two more things:

1. Lucky: I forgot about Hazzard out in Perry county. You could go out there as it would be the closest place to fill up. Just get on the Daniel Boone Parkway off I-75 and head east. Closer than Richmond. Make sure you have the receipts in the event KSP pulls you over.

2. Joemonkey: Yeah, I know what you mean. We had a little saying that the eastern part of Kentucky was like Hotel California. You check in, but never leave.

You might want to buy the documetery Dancing Outlaw. Its about your stereotypical Wv guy but it will give you a good idea about the kind of people from this area.

Im from louisville, lived in lexington for a few years, back in louisville now.
It really is a great state, though after you have lived here your whole life, you begin to feel a bit of wanderlust.
However I have always had the feeling that I would end up back in kentucky to raise possible children, or even in later life to just retire.
If you are into nature at all there is plenty of camping and fishing out in eastern ky
Havent had the trouble of living in a dry county either.

Where will you be moving from? What type of life are you accustomed to? I am fairly confident you will like kentucky, but if you are moving from New York City to Corbin, expect a change.

Hehe...not only have I heard of that town.....I LIVE in that town. I am a Corbinite. But yeah......it's pretty small. Cost of living isn't horrible but there aren't a great deal of good paying jobs. We did have an American Greeting but it went out(they moved) and the other big place is CSX. It's not a horrible place but it is dry, as someone else said. It's a nice balanced drive to either Lexington or Knoxville....about 85 to 90 miles either way. It's basically just your average small town. If you need any more info Lucky, just reply back and I'll try to help you as best I can. :)

Hehe...and the big reason that this part of KY is dry(in my opinion) is due to the high level of bootleg population. :) If the county goes wet, the bootleggers are outta business! If it stays dry, they're still in business. They probably contribute to having people vote for it to stay dry as it secures their business. I think that is a bigger reason than the religious stuff(although that could also have some effect as well).

wow, someone who lives there! :D

what do you think of the paper? Do you read it? Are sports really big in the area? And since you actually live there, how much can i expect to pay to rent a modest like 2 bedroom house?
