I need to read up on SAP ERP for my new job, can anyone recommend a good book to read?

TIA :)

EDIT: I am looking for a general book first, something like SAP 101, or ERP 101..

What version of the software are you going to be working with? R/3 or mySAP?

totally no clue

maybe I need to pick up a general ERP book first...

I have no clue, other than that being what my company uses. But we also use LotusNotes, so what the fuck do we know?

But have you integrated the two? A few years back I had to integrate Lotus Notes with an SAP implementation using RFCs - with no documentation on either end. I believe I am only the second person in the world to have done this successfully - the first one being the guy who gave me the sample code :p

In many areas of this world SAP professionals are most highly paid professionals. Before seeing that stats, I was assuming that Oracle Professionals are highly paid but Sap is more rewarding. You should go for some e-books. There are many sites which allow users to download such ebooks in free.

At my previous employer they had I believe 3 SAP consultants/programmers on-site 10 hours/day, 5 days a week, for about 2 years setting up their system.
Those consultants were making over $200/hour. And they always go on very long vacations after they complete a job.

I couldn't do it because it would drive me insane... but you certainly can't say the pay wasn't good.

what you need is to understand your role in the whole thing first. ERP implementation is a big project, there are many different roles that needs very different skill set. If you are doing implementation, you need to understand the business as well as the software functionality. If you are doing customization, you need to understand the technical foundation of the software. If you don't know your role, it will be very tough to pickup the right skill because ERP is so complex. Even within SAP, there are many different functional areas that require different skill set such as financial, manufacturing, or supply chain.

Hmmm... so why hasn't Microsoft gotten into the game?

They have. They are partnering with SAP on several self-service products to integrate Office with SAP ERP functionality. Things like using Outlook to schedule a vacation and having that automatically enter the vacation time in SAP's PTO table.

I work in SAP ERP almost daily. Personally I think that it's an exceptional system, certainly not perfect, and certainly insanely complex, but the number of capabilities is simply mid-boggling.

Depending on the size of the OP's company though, they could have implemented anything from a plain vanilla SAP instance to a heavily customized unique version. That alone can make it difficult to read up on, but it's compounded by the official SAP documentation being largely exclusive to SAP's official training classes. I really cannot think of a book off the top of my head. My initial recommendation would be to look on eBay to see if anyone is selling their course materials from a lower-level course. In my case, since I work as an analyst for HR Systems, it was the HR305 course.
