There's no way I'd use a manual for a daily commuter, it's terrible in bad traffic, and harder to use a cell phone or drink coffee etc.
If I was buying a high powered sports car then yes it would be manual, of course.
I won't argue with the traffic thing. If you're stuck in gridlock everyday, it gets annoying.
However, I would argue that you shouldn't be talking on your cell phone, drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, or whatever the heck else you people do during your commutes. You should be concentrating on the road.

Argue all you want...but most people do indeed eat and drink on the road.

But if you've got a girlfriend, nothing beats the front bench seat and a column shifter. 😛

Good. Maybe you'll focus on, say, driving?

I've drove automatic my whole life since I was 16.
Then 3 weeks ago I picked up my new to me GTI. I don't have plates on it right now and it's sitting, however I had the woman's plates (the one I bought it from) for a couple weeks before she needed them back. So I've had some practice.
It definitely takes some getting used to, and it is pretty easy to understand how it works and you really need to just get a feel for it. Now though I am wondering to myself why I didn't learn it earlier because it's more fun. You definitely feel in control of your vehicle a lot more.
Again I'm no expert yet and when I was driving it, I would drive it to work and back, and then use my other car when I was going places that I knew had stop lights on hills. The main issue I have now is that I have to build my confidence of getting into first gear from a stop on a hill. Getting into first from a flat surface isn't that bad, but sometimes it's real smooth, sometimes it's a little rougher.
I say go for the manual man.

Ya just because you are eating or talking on the cell phone doesn't mean you aren't paying attention.
I'm a computer science major, I'm good at multi tasking, it's just in my blood 🙂
I've also never been in an accident and have saved myself from dumbass drivers plenty of times.

decsions decisions....
That is what I thought.....the GT-S has more torque, but at a higher band. You really have to work teh car to get it up there.Originally posted by: BD2003

I own one - it is not very torquey. The auto gt-s is actually slower than the auto GT.And where it is VERY torquey (over 6000rpm) its like trying to rein in a beast.
And the stick is an absolute clunky disaster in normal driving, ESPECIALLY in traffic.
But I still love the car. 🙂

Is the public transportation so bad there that you absolutely have to commute in heavy traffic using a car?

Well, when you get in an accident because of your supposed multitasking abilities, then maybe you will think twice before sucking down another double gulp and gabbing on your cell phone while you are driving.

What if you live in the city and commute out for work and commute in everyday?

Congrats on the GTI! I have a 04 1.8T. The only car I like the yellow on is the MKIV Golf/GTI body style, I don't know why.
First thing Diverter Valve, and chip it 😀!

What's the point of living in the city then?
