Anyone here ever switch to stick from automatic and happy they did?

Manual gets better gas mileage and gives you more control over accelerating conditions. Only two downsides - traffic jams and overall tedium.

If I was buying a high powered sports car then yes it would be manual, of course.

I won't argue with the traffic thing. If you're stuck in gridlock everyday, it gets annoying.

However, I would argue that you shouldn't be talking on your cell phone, drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, or whatever the heck else you people do during your commutes. You should be concentrating on the road.

Argue all you want...but most people do indeed eat and drink on the road.

I'm thinking about it. I bought my Accord.. well, because I stumbled over a midsized Honda wagon with a stickshift, and I really wanted to learn how to drive a stick.

However, I learned that the stick isn't really the best option for a family car. At least not in my car. Like I've said before the clutch is grabby and I have to baby the hell out of it, revmatching perfectly or we'll get jerked around. I really appreciate the manual gearbox, but when I've got a two year old in the back seat and another kid in the plans I want the ride to be smooth and easy. I know it's got a lot to do with my car, because my wife drives a Neon with a manual and when I drive her car it's smooth as silk. I don't even have to try with the clutch. If I abuse it a bit and just drop it without revmatching, the reaction is only half as bad as an imprecise rev match in my car.

That's why I mentioned going over to something like another Crown Vic/Grand Marquis in a different thread. I want something smooth, casual and quiet on the highway, where the miles are just gobbled up quietly and effortlessly. I don't care much for how well it holds up in the corners or how well it communicates the road feel, I just want it to be as stress free as I can get it, preferably with a column shifter.

But I wouldn't buy another car just for myself without a manual transmission. It's a lot more fun, much more interactive, it feels much more satisfying to drive, it makes the car feel much quicker, and you'll get a much better feel for the car.

But if you've got a girlfriend, nothing beats the front bench seat and a column shifter. 😛

Manual all the way, unless you have to deal with traffic.

I drive manual, and now that my schedule has changed up and I have to deal with traffic, I am starting to loathe it.

But that days that I don't, I wouldn't give it up, makes driving much more fun.

And that makes it right somehow?

Ya just because you are eating or talking on the cell phone doesn't mean you aren't paying attention. I get double gulps from 7-11 all the time and I drive while i drink them. I also talk on the cell phone if I have to while driving. I'm a computer science major, I'm good at multi tasking, it's just in my blood 🙂

However now that my new car is a stick, I won't be doing that nearly as much, especially since I'm learning stick on this car. I just got a new cell phone and made sure it was bluetooth compatible so I could get a headset to wear while i drive.

I've also never been in an accident and have saved myself from dumbass drivers plenty of times.

Hmmm...I am gonna buy a used Celica after I graduate. It was going to stick, but I really do not thing i will have eth aptience to deal with it in traffic. I would buy it w/ an automtaic, but I think this car is gonna suck with an auto just b/c it has no torque.....

decsions decisions....

Good. Maybe you'll focus on, say, driving?

No kidding,
Cell phone if needed hands free, but really, focus on your driving.
I find driving a manual keeps me more focused on the road and DRIVING my car. Which I now love.

OP, go for the manual.

Btw, maybe I missed it, what kind of car is it?

I've drove automatic my whole life since I was 16.

Then 3 weeks ago I picked up my new to me GTI. I don't have plates on it right now and it's sitting, however I had the woman's plates (the one I bought it from) for a couple weeks before she needed them back. So I've had some practice.

It definitely takes some getting used to, and it is pretty easy to understand how it works and you really need to just get a feel for it. Now though I am wondering to myself why I didn't learn it earlier because it's more fun. You definitely feel in control of your vehicle a lot more.

Again I'm no expert yet and when I was driving it, I would drive it to work and back, and then use my other car when I was going places that I knew had stop lights on hills. The main issue I have now is that I have to build my confidence of getting into first gear from a stop on a hill. Getting into first from a flat surface isn't that bad, but sometimes it's real smooth, sometimes it's a little rougher.

I say go for the manual man.

Congrats on the GTI! I have a 04 1.8T. The only car I like the yellow on is the MKIV Golf/GTI body style, I don't know why.

First thing Diverter Valve, and chip it 😀!

Yes, actually, it's exactly what it means. Some of your attention is diverted from the road.

I'm a computer science major, I'm good at multi tasking, it's just in my blood 🙂

Well, I'm a software engineer, that doesn't amount to anything in this argument. It doesn't make you any better at multitasking. The human mind can't really do multiple things at once in an efficient manner... that's a fact.

I've also never been in an accident and have saved myself from dumbass drivers plenty of times.

Well, when you get in an accident because of your supposed multitasking abilities, then maybe you will think twice before sucking down another double gulp and gabbing on your cell phone while you are driving.

My first two cars (and most I drove before those) were all automatics. My current car is a manual, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

I own one - it is not very torquey. The auto gt-s is actually slower than the auto GT.And where it is VERY torquey (over 6000rpm) its like trying to rein in a beast.

And the stick is an absolute clunky disaster in normal driving, ESPECIALLY in traffic.

But I still love the car. 🙂

That is what I thought.....the GT-S has more torque, but at a higher band. You really have to work teh car to get it up there.

I was not planning on buying the GT-S b/c of teh six speed manual. I can barely drive stick, but I absolutley couldn't drive the six speed in the Celica. I just kept stalling because I kept putting it in 4th when I wanted to go to 2nd. It was a disastor and my friend kept laughing at me.

..I went the other way. Fun at first but a real drag after a few months. Especially if you live in an area with lots oh hills.

i've had lots of people tell me that they don't care for stick any more after driving it for a while.

Of course you would never know such a thing from the e-chest thumping on anandtech.

not in LA traffic

Is the public transportation so bad there that you absolutely have to commute in heavy traffic using a car?

What if you live in the city and commute out for work and commute in everyday?

Yes, because it's a fact that everyone who talks on their cell phone or drinks in the car must get into an accident some day.

It's also a fact that everyone is the same at multi-tasking and that no one person is better than any other person at multi-tasking.

Everyone keeps their attention in the exact same places as everyone else while doing the same tasks.

What's the point of living in the city then?

thanks, I'm very hapy with it thus far, although it's sitting w/out plates for now until I can get the lein release so I can register it.

I may chip it but I really don't know much about that stuff. I want to keep it pretty much 100% stock. I have however already gotten a stubby antenna and smoked sides/bumper markers for it. I may get some smoked tail lights too, and I definitely need to tint it as soon as I get the funds. I hate driving w/the sun glaring in my eyes 🙁

cause you like living in the city? 😕

Look at all the people who work in the city and live in desolate areas. Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to not use the main highways during rush hour.
