I got a chip today, some rock, sucks to live in the boonies. I want to fix it to prevent it from spreading, this car is only 3 months old. :( How durable is the repair?

I fixed a small spider crack in my windshield with one of those windshield repair kits, it held up for a long time until another rock hit a spot on the windshield near the existing crack and it spread all the way across the window. Those kits work pretty well if the crack is wide enough so the epoxy can seep into the crack.

I too have a chip on my windshield. I remember my dad having one too and he had it patched, it didn't look nice at all, but he said it keeps it from spreading. Anyone else know exactly what to do?

It depends on the size of the crack. If its too large (more than 2-3 inches) the entire windshield needs to be replaced. This is usually covered under your car insurance though.

well, it's not a crack yet, it's a chip, very small, I'd say 3 mm in diameter. But I know cracks start from small chips so I want to get it fixed if windshield repair has good results.

I think as long as its not chipped all the way through the glass it should be okay. I dunno if something like that can be repaired.

i too have a chip, couple people thought it was from a BB gun :| b/c it's so round in shape, but it was probably from the truck in front of me with a round pebble. :(

Yeah it's pretty shallow, but I want to play it safe, once you get a crack, it's easy for it to grow out of control, I've seen this on my two previous cars. :(

I'll call some places tomorrow and try to get it done. I'm just curious about people's experiences if this kind of repair is durable.

Very durable. Never had a shop fixed chip spread, though I got cheap and tried one of those do it yourself kits once...didn't work for me.

Got smashed with a rock once while driving my old Honda. Saw the rock coming, looked like it was about an inch...SMACK.. circulular crack looking like the sun with lots of rays coming off, full 2" diameter. Got it fixed, didn't figure it'd hold, but thought I'd try. Years later when I got rid of the car the cracks hadn't spread and you still couldn't see the repair unless you looked through it at an angle in bright light. Very impressive and durable.
