Anyone here ever grow a giant sunflower?

I love gardening and watching my plants grow. One day many years ago I decided to grow a giant sunflower. It didn't look like much at first, but wow did that plant ever grow. It was putting on about 3 inches a day. The mature plant ended up being 10 feet tall with a flowerhead (sunflowers are not true flowers, but are called composites) measuring nearly 2 feet across. :Q

The stem or trunk was 3 inches in diameter and leaves were huge too. Sort of reminded me of a triffid a bit. 😉

The bees would just cover the flower. In the fall after it died, I was using it to feed the birds. Then a squirrel came by and raided it. 🙁

Damn squirrels.

Anyone else grow these monstrous things?

I planted over 46 varieties of sunflowers this year, ranging in size (if they grow as advertised) from a few inches up to 15 feet tall. Just got the first flower a couple weeks ago.

I have 40 acres of sunflowers at the moment, but no flowers on them yet. About a month from now, I hope.

Wow, what a sight it must be when they flower, please post pics !

These are commercial sunflowers, so they don't have much scent. When the seeds get ripe, they are so heavy that the head falls forward, so it's very hard for the birds to get to the seeds. The deer don't seem to have any problems, tho.
