Anyone Here Ever Been to PA Dutch Country?

I'm planning a trip there and I don't know whether to stay in Bird-In-Hand or Intercourse. Anyone know anything about the area and a good place to stay?

yep..been there.

You're better off staying in Bird-in-Hand... IIRC, there's a bit more in that area as far as motels, things to do, food, etc.

Just remember this:

DUTCH WONDERLAND?
Think about it, dippy: A theme park based on AMISH people and their lifestyles.

Skip Dutch Wonderland.

Depends on what kind of accommodations you are looking at. Both of those towns are in the trafficky tourist areas, on route 340, and they are so close to one another that it doesn't really matter which one you pick. I personally would not stay at a hotel/motel directly on 340, 23 or 30 just to avoid the traffic. I can't recommend you a particular place to stay because Lancaster County is a day trip for me.

Dutch Wonderland was ancient when i was a kid. I can't imagine how crappy it must be nowadays. The upside of it, however, is that there's plenty of outlet stores right up the street from it, so the day won't be a complete waste.

The outlet stores were the only thing of interest to me when we went... pretty sure they had a Nike outlet, I spent quite a bit there. 🙂

I'm planning to go to Gettysburg and tour the battlefield etc. by bike and then on to Amish country for some bike riding, farmer's markets, restaurants, local crafts, and outlets.

Hey mithrandir2001, is traffic really bad there?

Thanks so far guys.

Nice people. Just dont take pictures of them, they dont care for it. Also, although the Amish are "quaint", they are not stupid, so mind your manners 😀

Try to stop by if you are really into biking. It's only minutes away, and quite worth it.

Well, it's not like California's freeways, but some of the major numbered routes will be bumper-to-bumper in the towns because you have a lot of tourist traffic on roads that are all two lanes. By the same token, some of the back roads will be empty aside from a horse-drawn carriage or two.

Thanks, mithrandir2001. I knew that the back roads would be good for bike riding, but maybe I'll take the car that way as well.

I covered a fire in amish country in PA a year ago or so...its was pretty crazy because of course, they dont have hydrants or anything, and they had to bring tankers in and dump the water into a big kiddie pool, then go get more water. I think the barn burned down before they even got enough water.

just felt like sharing 😛

Yep! The local gift shops around the area make profit off of it, too, by selling "I love Intercourse" and "I'd rather be in Intercourse" t-shirts and bumper stickers 🙂
