Anyone here ever been Snuba diving?

I was reading about Scuba diving, something I have some interest in doing on my honeymoon coming up. Then I saw something called Snuba diving. Apparently you are hooked up to a house that can follow you to about 20 feet deep. No long classes or certification required and its a little less expensive.

How much does it suck compared to Scuba diving though? Should we just spring the extra cash and time and do the full on Scuba or is Snuba pretty solid?

It sucks a lot compared to scuba. It's like snorkling. Take real scuba classes (not the one day one at a resort) and get certified.

while a good suggestion it's cheaper to take the resort class and make sure you enjoy it first. Also better if you won't get to use it much

The resort classes don't teach much and just slap a tank on you. The actual certification goes through training so that you can do certain things without even thinking, that safety and training is why I can't recommend a resort class. Not to mention the actual book/class time.

I went and did snuba on one of the cruses with my wife. Loved it, dont' have scuba certification, so this is the next best thing.

If you can go scuba diving, I would suggest that(I hope to try it someday) but if you can't I highly recommend going snuba diving. Nothing like snorkeling since you go 20-25 feet deep, you don't relaly feelthe line and you breathe through a regulator just like scuba diving.

Snuba diving is like watching the Apocalypse Now "ride of the valkries" scene on an iPod. Its pretty cool, but hardly like watching it in iMax

I am scuba certified, but I still went snuba diving once. We were in a sweet bay in Hawaii that wasnt more than 30 ft deep anyways, and our lines let us get basically to the bottom. It was tons of fun until the nozzle blew with my dad and I connected to it :-D Luckily being scuba certified we both knew to not panic, slowly go up and breathe out at the same time to prevent over-inflating our lungs and everything was fine. The tank jetting accross the water was entertaining to watch too.

I recommend it, and considering I already had the crazy rare tank blowing you will be fine 🙂 Best of all, no heavy ass equipment to deal with and you can go down in just some shorts instead of a wet suit or the not-so-pleasant on the skin scuba vest.

Yep. I can't pass the scuba physical, so snuba is the most I'm allowed to do anymore.

When it's the best you're gonna get, you either accept that and enjoy it for what it is, or stay on the boat.

I would recommend getting certified before the honeymoon if you can. Trying to cram a whole open water class into your honeymoon can be stressful, which is the last thing a honeymoon is supposed to be.

Don't you think that would get tiring pulling that behind you?

If this is more than a one time experience, or you have any inkling that you may want to purse the sport in the future, then you will want to get your scuba cert or at least try a scuba experience. If you just want the experience of breathing underwater once then do snuba if it's that much cheaper.

Other things to think about are the diving opportunities you have at home and if you will dive frequently, or are you just going to resort dive once every year. When I was younger and strapped for cache I did a lot of snorkeling and taught myself to be a pretty good free diver. The equipment for free diving is cheap and was mucho comfortable in the water when I eventually went for my Open Water I certification.

Damn, now you've got me really missing summer at La Jolla Cove in California and wishing I wasn't stuck here in this Idaho winter.

Depending on where you're going, you may not need to get certified if you want to try scuba.

My wife and I took a Discover Scuba class before we went on our honeymoon to Maui. We were in an indoor swimming pool, started out in the shallow end until we got the hang of it, and moved to the deep end for the rest. It was very inexpensive. You don't get any kind of certification, it just lets you see if you'll like the experience. We live in Kansas, so we were pretty sure we wouldn't use certification too much.

Once we got to Maui, we looked up several dive shops that offered a Discover Scuba class (we researched this ahead of time). An hour on shore going over everything, another hour in shallow water practicing, then about an hour in up to 30-foot depths. We swam with turtles, saw eels, had a total blast. My wife loved it so much we went back down after lunch with fresh tanks. Then we did it again the next day with a different company (the one we used first was booked the next day).

Snuba looked like fun, but the freedom of scuba was incredible. I envy people that live close to good diving waters.

An underwater house?!? This I gotta see!

I've never done it myself, but I do laugh at the people who do.

Open water class... it's the only way to go. Most resorts will get you in the water pretty quick.

Its killer, just like scuba but the tank is floating above ya! GREAT dont need to take a class.

Diving at 80' is far superior to floating above some coral at 20'...
