To make money as a Photographer you have the live the Dark Side, just as a Sniper with a rifle can kill and that's saying the best shooter can't kill and it will Eat your Soul.
Really depends on the type of photographer you choose to be. Wedding photographers can make great money but requires crazy hours and dealing with lots of crappy people. Event and portrait photography is dying the fastest because of reasons already discussed. The only place to make really good money is in commercial/editorial/fashion type of shooting which is hard to break into, but that's when you start managing projects with $100k budgets.
I shot a lot of weddings - Party Time - But I always introduced my take of photographs in that the hoard who missed things like a little girl dancing with a dream of her own.
Elders loved them shots and I gave them away FREE.
Never made money shooting Weddings other then I made friends and one armed Bandits have nothing to do with Slot Machines.
