Anyone here cook with beer? What kind of beer should I use?

I don't drink because I don't like alcohol, so the "only cook with what you would drink" advice doesn't work with me.

Is there any advice for cooking with beer? Would cheapo Budweiser or something work just as well as something like $1 a bottle beer?

I'll probably be cooking anything from beer battered chicken to beef stews to uh, other things that I don't know about yet?

I like to use dark heavy stuff myself, you get more flavor that way. Cooking a chicken with a bud light is pretty much cooking a chicken with water.

For marinating steaks I like Bud light. It softens things up without leaving too much of a "beer" taste to the meat.

For stews I like a more bold flavor that a stout can provide. Guinness works because it is readily available, but there are others out there that provide more flavor.

For beer batters I use the Bud light too. Haven't really tried anything else because I didn't feel a need to.

That's about the extent of my "Cooking with beer".

I've tried Killian with one of my beef stews. Can't say I really liked the flavor... it wasn't beefy, it was more spicy. I wasn't too impressed.

If you don't drink it, why are you cooking with it? Cooking with beer/wine is to add the flavor of the beer/wine.

I use Bass and other English ales to cook with. I have an awesome Beer Biscuit recipe that's great with Bass.

I've always found that some of the cheaper wines actually work better for cooking with than more expensive wines... My favorite for cooking game with is Lake Niagara white. I can get a gallon of the stuff for $6.

That sounds correct. I came into this thread thinking Guinness for beef or venison.

the brand doesnt matter its the type of beer. if you want a light taste go for one of the lagers. and if you want a heavier taste start moving up into the ales, porters, stouts or you can get wild and use a fruit beer. like everybody said it just depends on what you are cooking then decide on the type of beer.
