We have a number of birds in my house. Anyways, I decided to take our old 266 Mhz AMD IBM and clean it up so I can start to upgrade it. Damn, that thing had enough dust in it to make the Adams family jealous. I must have spend 3 hours vacuuming that thing out. It was fun taking apart the disk and cd-rom drives to vacuum them out. I also ended up taking apart the power unit as well as removing the motherboard. Somehow I got it all back together and runs better than ever. Uh, this is kinda a random post, so just refer back to the title when formulating a reply.

vacuum = static electricity 🙁

I will grab a can of air to blow mine out on occasion.

Umm. I think you really need to clarify Where you put that copper. Why Would you use a HIGHLY COMDUCTIVE material to PREVENT STATIC? Did I miss a day at electronics school?
 
Use an air compressor to blow the dust off!!! 🙂

And I believe I read that baffled2 cleans her computers regularly.

What you fail to see is that the air being Pulled is what causes the static electricity to be CREATED. IF the edge of vacuum tip gets too close to the board there is a chance of a small spark (so small you never see it) that can damage your system. BUY The compressed air. Air itself is not conductive (It';s the stuff in the air that allows for static to travel.) THe air that gets staryed out of the can is normally free of contaminates and is less likely to be an ESD problem!

We keep an old electrolux vac around, which has both suck & blow ports...I hook it up to blow, put on the chisel tip and go at it...nothing like forcing a 4500rpm fan to go 10,000rpm's with forced air to clean it up 😉

Plus, I have positive pressure in my case (more input than output fans) so it does't suck dust in through the drives 🙂
 
How many of you take your Keyboard apart and clean it? I have a MS Natural Pro that I clean bi monthly.I didn't use to until one day I had spilled a drink on it while my system was turned off (so no damage was done). I took it apart to clean off the moisture and I was shocked at the crap that was in the inside of the keyboard. Gross would be to kind. I can assure you that if you haven't cleaned yours in six months you will want to wash your hands befire you use them to eat. Now I won't even use anybody elses keyboard but my own when I work on another system if I can help it. Your system might get dusty and even dirty but it doesn't get as bad as your keyboard.

If you use a cheap $15.00 Keyboard you probably will just want to get a new one but if you use an expensive Keyboard make sure you take the time to clean it. As long as you don't have it plugged in you can use water to clean it. Just make sure it's bone dry before you plug it in. I take the Keyboard apart to get under the keys. It also drys faster that way.


If any of you have an old keyboard around that had a lot of use take it apart and you will see what I am talking about.
 
Just took everthing outside to my compressor and blew everything off when I upgraded last weekend, but wasn't too dusty since its last upgrade six months ago.
 
Red, you sick sick man. I took my MS Elite apart about a month ago (4 yo kb) and it hardly had any "stuff" in it 😛 On the other hand, 90% of the alphabet keys are worn perfectly smooth...

You are 100 % correct on this one. I have two mini keyboards that I use for client's systems, no way I want my hands on some of the keyboards
I've seen !

That was then this is now. Mine is as clean as a whistle. But yes I am a sick sick man🙂
 
I vacuum mine all the time. I don't see any problem with it. The air can is not strong enough. What air cans you guy using?
