Anyone here buy a Dell laptop?

Do any of you think the four year warranty + four year accidental warranty care is worth the money? From what I understand if you drop your laptop and it breaks, you're covered under that accidental coverage no questions asked. Is this true and is it worth it? I'm debating whether or not I should invest in it. Right now I can get a 600m with SXGA+ screen for a little over a grand but with the warranty added it comes to around $1600+ shipped.

My gf broke my roommates 700m screen by dropping a cup on it while he left it on the damn floor and that is not covered under warranty. If he would have gotten accidental coverage it would have been peachy. He didn't and it's $500 bucks to replace the screen.

I said fvck that and eBayed a screen for $300 and replaced it myself.

Moral of the story is, if you don't leave your laptop on the floor under my desk opened in a 180 degree fashion, you'll be fine with the generic warranty. If you like to do that then by all means get the accidental warranty 🙂

Oh and 4 years + 4 years accidental = too much money me thinks.

Just buy it without the warranty...Dell will send you an offer in a few weeks in the mail with a pretty good deal on extending the warranty...

they did this with the last 5 laptops I have purchased...

3 years yes. 4 no. but not if your notebook only sits on your desk. if you actually carry it around, throw it in a backpack, etc, the accident coverage is very nice.

good idea dartworth.

When she dropped a cup on it, was it full of anything or was it empty?

Who keeps their laptop for 4 years?

I do, I have my laptop from circa early 2000 and it runs like the day I got it (likely better). The only reason why I bought a new laptop is because I didn't buy this laptop (the 2000 one), so it didn't come with a discreet graphics card therfore I couldn't play even the simpliest 3D games and the last straw was the fact that I had dual batteries, power optimized setup and was only able to get an 1:20 battery life when watching a dvd :| And thats with fairly new batteries! I shoulda been able to watch at least a 2 hour movie on this laptop before it had to power down.

I don't know if you need to invest in it, but remember this, you can always add to your warranty after the fact. I believe that you have until the end of the current duration of your warranty to purchase an extension.

Note: I've got an 8600 Inspiron, and I've never had ANYTHING break, so I would get a pretty simply warranty to start.

It was empty, but it smashed the screen.

teh Dell laptops aren't very durable, get an IBM.

You mean a Lenovo? 😉

Which lack the latest and greatest technology. Don't get me wrong, the IBM/Lenovo notebooks are great notebooks, but I want the latest and greatest hardware in mine.

I never buy warantees with electronic equipment anymore. Nothing ever goes wrong with my stuff.. lol

I own a dell inspiron 8500 with the 15.4 inch widescreen. It's 2 1/2 yrs old and it's still running great. Only problems are a fried hard drive which i replaced for $130 (80 gig) and the touchpad is scratched and nappy looking and the corner where my right hand rests is scratched becuase i wear a bracelet..

i too never purchase warranties. i'm sure this will bite me in the tush someday.

I think their worth it on laptops, especially the long ones. I don't think there was a time where I didn't use the warranty on a laptop. And if I didn't use the warranty, it was likely because it was expired 😉

it's totally worth it. i've had issues with one of my laptops (not sure if it was my fault -- probably just was a result of continuous use) to the extent that i called dell maybe 10-15 times to get numerous parts replaced over a two year period. at the end of these calls, one of the tech support reps said "you've been calling a lot. i think it's time that we just replace your machine." since this was two years later, i got a newer dell laptop. i was totally happy with it because i planned on upgrading anyway. needless to say, i never had to pay for it. i'm typing this response on that particular laptop now 🙂

i've had mine (work laptop, dell) for about 2 years now. i dropped it out of a backpack about 3 weeks ago, the LCD backlight would work and a few keys stopped working.

everything was covered, i bet it would have been expensive if it wasn't covered.

I have the four year accidental warranty for the Dell Inspiron 8600 purchased last Oct 2004. If I happen to drop it, break the LCD, spill drink on the keyboard, etc. It will be repaired/replaced by Dell. Paid about $400 for a $1400 notebook. That's about $1/day for a warranty. Gives me the peace of mind, just in case anything bad happens.

Ummm me or well my company. I just got a Dell 700m last week to replace my gateway 300mhz i got in 2000.

You poor bastards. I'm all for getting the most mileage out of your purchase, but there is no way I'd keep a laptop for more than 3 years. Didn't your company at some point think 300MHz was a hinderance to productivity?

The only reason I'm at year 2 with mine is because I bought an awesome laptop to begin with (Compaq X1000). Even with two years on the clock, the 1.6GHz Pentium M, 4 hour battery, WSXGA LCD, and size/weight are holding up very well compared to newer laptops. The only thing I upgraded on it was the memory (to 1GB) and the optical drive (to a NEC ND-6500 DVDRW).

use one of their 750 off 1500 coupon. get a new laptop. after a year sell it on ebay and then buy another laptop using the 750 off 1500 coupon.

ibms are nice and stuff but too overpriced.
