...why is that? Coffee = good. That reminds me: when I get done reading this I'll be off roasting some.
Caffiene creates an ADD-like effect in normal people. In people with ADD it can have very random effects but almost always causes them to get so damn hyper you want to kill them. Hell, when I get on caffiene
I want to kill me.
Well, I'm one of the good randoms, then. My hands get a touch shaky, but coffee is the only thing that can get me sitting still and keeping on one train of thought. If I get bored I'm still screwed, but without coffee, I can't listen and write at the same time (not good for lectures, ya know?).
Same with me... It's us ADD'ers self-medicating. I'm ADHD, and so is my son. (I didn't know I was until we took my son in to get diagnosed... Dr turned to me and asked the same questions. LoL I thought I was just lazy/disorganized/easily bored/spaz). I drink gallons of coffee just to be able to sit in this fvcking cubicle all day. Nice thing about my son's changing medications every so often is I get the leftovers. heh (I can't afford the Dr visits and the medicine for both of us, so he gets it and I deal with it).
The thing about sugars I mentioned above: I'll post the book info when I get home. But in the meantime, as kids get older, the brain is conditioned to react a certain way to sugars and carbs. So if you have a Diet DrPepper, the brain will react the same way even though it's got no sugar. Because it's so used to that trigger of sweet flavor = sugar to the brain.
Sugar actually makes me lethargic. Just like caffeine. Self medicating.
If you're really concerned, I've heard that the electroshock therapy works very well. I won't do it to my son. When he's 18 if he wants to he can, but I won't pressure him or let him be pressured into doing it because if FRIGGIN HURTS! But it seems to work, so that may be an option.
And those of you saying ADD's a non-disease: Partially true. The school's first thing when my son was in 1st grade was "Ritalin!" I said "FVCK NO!". We actually waited 2 more years (well, not waiting, but trying everything else we possibly could) before we gave in and tried medication. I'm sure there are plenty of parents looking for an easy fix to an easy child who said "SURE!" the first time. Sigh.
My wife and I are cobbling together a theory that hadn't occured to us until our daughter was born in June. The baby formula makers are selling a new formulation with Omega 3's: known to help brain function. When I was a baby (born in 1970) many Dr's were telling parents that formula was BETTER than breastfeeding. So my mom fed me formula. My son had to have formula due to an illness my wife had right after giving birth. But she's able to breast feed my daughter now (NO PICS!!! Fvcking pervs!), and I'd be willing to bet serious money that she grows up without any sign of ADD...
