I guess one of the features in European city is their smaller street, thus rendering big SUV useless.
Maybe its time to categorize driver license based on the size of vehicle driven. At least this will demonstrate whether you're able to control the vehicle properly or not. And while they at it, maybe conduct driving test when its time to renew driver license every 2-3 renewal (every decade or so).

Yeah, we deal with thousands of immigration applicants every day here as well. Most of them coming across the Rio Grande. But generally we try to catch them &amp; send them back. :disgust:

That's one of the best ideas I've heard yet. I think it's only a matter of time before we see a federal ban on handheld cellphone usage while driving, but there are a lot of other crazy things out there that happen every day. Everyone here has dealt with a bad driver and it would be nice to know that they're being culled out every ten years.

Would be nice if US has a half decent public transportation system so you don't have to depend on your car everytime.

Well, I guess to play it safe I'd have to say everyone but me. Sorry, everyone, you will have to park your vehicles and start walking from now on. If you see me headed towards you in my large, lumbering SUV you should get out of the way, because my top-heavy, low-performance truck might not be able to stop in time. But on the bright side, if I'm the only one in a vehicle, my chances of injury have just decreased significantly.
 
I drive my SUV for exactly what it was intended for: Anything I want to do.

I know that CO2 emmsion from SUVs is what is keeping Canada from being able to meet Kyoto requirements.
Basically Industry CO2 is declining but our total CO2 is going up almost exclusivly because of SUVs

I have children I would like them to enjoy a kind of world I grew up in its pretty good. When people can't make intelligent choices governments will LEGISLATE so like cells phones SUVs may get banned.
Auto manufacturers love to sell SUVs cause its their highest profit margin. I think an enviro tax at purchase time for vehicles that don't get 25 mpg would be good and a tax rebate for those that get more than 40. It would provide an impetus for people to think with their pocket books, if they can afford the SUV then go for it and their need for excess can be put bakc into environmental issues. problem with gas tax its a flat tax and impacts low income people more. >>



And what will you do for the people who already have cars? How will they get the discount? Poor peopple dont buy new cars

I guess it's fair to say you're not religious, either. I don't thing God is very tolerant of statements like that...

i'm just saying that it shows little faith to be so fearful of death that you'd make it dangerous for others.

You want to know why there's such a big markup on them? Because they are in high demand. Auto manufacturers get giddy over a limited supply - high demand vehicle because the dealers can charge whatever they want to. Look at an S2000 or any of the M-series BMWs. And WordSmith, I'm taking care of my kids' future now, by putting them in the backseat with two tons of metal around them. The ultra-low-emissions hybrid with the fiberglass and carbon composite may get 80mpg, but it's not going to do too much for the occupants when it gets totalled. Safety cages, airbags, etc. weigh more and cost mileage.

But the best benefit of my SUV - when I want to haul a bunch of people; I can. When I want to haul a bunch of groceries; I can. When I want to haul a bunch anything; I can &amp; do. I don't have to worry about things blowing out or someone walking by and grabbing stuff out of the back of the bed of a pickup (yes, someone can also bust a window, but what can you do?), it's waterproof, and it's -mine-. >>

There is a security factor in owning an SUV, as long as you drive responsibility, why not? I never said that an SUV owner has the right to drive like a prick. What if your driving on a road and someone runs a light and plows into you? If you're in an SUV, you and the people in your car are better equipped to survive than in a little hatchback. Correct?

Man! I never thought that 'thinking' an SUV is safer than a sedan, would be a mortal sin to be condemned to hell. Jesus Christ!

its not that there aren't viable alternatives. minivans are safer, use less gas, generally more interior space, probably less likely to kill the other driver in an accident. nice eh? large/midsize sedan matches all above except for interior space.

I'm not making it dangerous for others. You have to be aware of the number of SUVs out there, just like buses, trucks, trains, and telephone poles. If you have the foresight to protect yourself that is a good thing. If you put the almighty mpg over everything else, you have to realize that you are sacrificing one thing (safety) for another (economy). Yes, there are tradeoffs that aren't as severe as an SUV, but that's my choice, and fortunately I live in a society that permits me to make this choice.

If -you- choose to drive around in a can-of-car like a Kia Rio you have already made the decision to make it dangerous for yourself. I'm not making that decision for you.

Glad you asked! I'd implement it slowly over a 10 yr period lower percentage at the start and gradually increase it. That way manufacturers with inventories wouldn't be punished for stock and could in time meet the mileage standards so to speak to get vehicles over the bar so they wouldn't be taxed. Like I showed you before worked wonders for the Outboard industry and their emmision quotas.
It also worked with appliances where the gov't established energy consumption guidelines and gave GE et all time to comply.

Some taxes ALREADY implemented IE British Columbia are stupid they tax on gross vehicle weight on legacy vehicles. Totally unfair, they didn't give the purchaser forwarning that the vehicle they invested all this money into would be taxed or give manufactueres time to adjust weight. If a vehicle is 5lb over its taxed I bet if Dodge knew that they would have cut out that 5lb.
Things like this are coming I'd just like to see it fair.

I was just thinking the same thing. I guess it would be an Excursion, but with custom options unlike anything ever considered by the auto industry. And I would not, repeat would not, want to be in a head-on collision with it.
 
but in your arguements you are creating the false dilema that only suvs are safe, but there are other even safer vehicles, namely minivans.

If more young men drove minivans, I'm sure they wouldn't be rated as safely. Agreed?

And gas? Exactly why did we go to war with Iraq for? It wasn't to free Kuwait(sp?) was it? Anyway, its the American way to consume, as is the freedom of choice. Is it not?
 
Thats like hating someone cause they can buy ribeye steaks while your stuck eating something that comes from a can... Don't hate ppl cause they got the $$$ to buy one of these things... btw I don't own a SUV cause of there high rollover rate!
