A friend of mine just got an AT&T wireless package installed at his house. Part of the package was broadband internet service.

He gets about 400Kbps for file transfers so he's happy about that. But whenever he tries to play Unreal Tournament online it trips out.

When he connects to a server it just sits at the connecting screen. We he goes back to the list of servers, the server he was trying to connect to shows 9999 for the ping. All the other servers show normal pings. So he tries to join another one and the same thing happens.

He asked me for help but this is new to me. Is there a way around this or is he screwed?

He's running Windows98 on an Athlon box.

The install company put a USB phone line Ethernet box on his computer. Pretty strange unit. Made by Linksys, plugs into the USB, says Home Ethernet on the box, but uses the phone jack instead of an RJ-45.

I have AT@T broadband at my house and have no problems. I used my own 3Com ethernet card to connect to the Cable modem, however. I've never heard of his setup. Is he in an apartment or a house?

AT&T sucks, they promised anyone whose able get thier digital cable TV should also be available for broadband, well in my area and many other areas it "isn't ready" and wont be for a few years. Its total BS and as a result thier having a lawsuit put against them

sorry off topic there, but all i can say is to tell your friend to reinstall unreal and make sure he has all the updates. Is is just unreal or all of his online games?

Ya, it's a pretty wierd setup.

He has a dish on his house that runs to a big box in his garage. No hard wires at all.

Supposedly the dish is lined up to a tower near by.

It's not the same as a cable modem or DSL from what I understand.
