so, I get a message today that our credit union is partnering with IDSafeChoice. the cost to us is only .95/month. However, everyone is automatically enrolled.

Is it even legal to auto-enroll you in a pay-for service plan? it's a buck a month, but even credit card companies have to ask you permission before they enroll you in similar offerings.

We can opt-out, but have to fill out a form and send it in.

Don't know whether it's legal (you'd have to read the terms and conditions on your account when you opened it) but it sounds like a public relations nightmare.

I would write a letter to the CU board of directors protesting this move. I have found CUs to be quite responsive to the members.

the beauty of a credit union is as a member you have a vote and at monthly/quarterly meetings you can vote for this kind of thing or not.

Chances are this kind of thing was brought up ate a regular meeting....something you don't normally attend, and now you get this "surprise" letter telling you that you will be enrolled or opt out if you would be more of an active member in your credit union and pay attention to those notices they send you, this would not be a surprise at all.

Secondly, if this is something you feel so strongly about, you can attend a meeting and bring it up and offer your position on the matter...but are you really going to go through all that trouble for a measly $12.00/year?

Hell, you probably spend more than that slugging the machines at work for candy bars, chips and soda or bottled water in 3 months....is it really worth it?

Third...you can simply change banks.....but in this climate...like it or not, I would suggest staying with a credit union...or better yet...OPT OUT!

the bottom line is that you are forking over $12.00/year to secure your ID from theft.....not bad IMO....of course that's not your problem, your problem is that they are doing this automatically without your previous knowledge and at the "last minute" and well, as I pointed out if you paid more attention you would know what is going on with your credit union.
