Anyone having trouble with Staples PNY 256 MB Memory?

I bought 2 x 256 MB PNY sticks from Staples.

I've tried them in three BX motherboards and in both cases they show up as 128 MB.

Any chance I got a lot that was mislabeled?

With the ram being that cheap, its possible PNY is selling High Density RAM. IE: it actually is 256mb, but you need a newer MB to see it all.

I have a high density stick in my mom's pc on a bx6, it sees/uses only 128mb of it.

I doubt that it would not be labeled High Density, but anything is possible.

Find the manual online for the MB and compare it's requirement for memory configuration with the memory in hand. That's where I'd start.

How many chips are on the slab and what do they say. You can a lot of times look up the ram by the memory itself.

Did a quick google search and if there are 4 chips on the whole module then its high density. Low density has 8.

it is more likely the mobo's you tried it on are the culprit than the "new" memory
those boards either don't support 256mb modules or the ram is HD as the others said
i used to have a bh6, i don't think it can take higher than 128mb sticks

It is absolutely possible that the memory is mis labeled. Those SOBS repackaged printer ram in a 64meg package when I bought ram from staples. I have had to take back PNY ram to staples for replacement 4 times, and now I will never buy staples ram. You could very well have gotten burned by them. Take it back until you are satisfied.

PNY PC133 memory will not function properly in many PC100/66 motherboards. I've seen the problem exist firsthand, while working on computers for customers at Staples(yes, I am employed at Staples). If you replace it with the PC100 PNY memory or use the K-byte PC133 you won't have any problems.
