Anyone having sucess with ATI 4870/4850.

I have been running ubuntu with the ATI drivers. Sleep was working if i used compiz-switch and suspended. But not with 9.3 thats not working. Also video tearing is annoying, this happens with or without compiz enabled.

Anyone have better success with other distros?

there was another way to fix this with older ATI cards, but i dont think it applies to the newer ones as the issues seems to be common, and 9.04 sounds like it has a fix, though you may have to use the open ati driver, check the link, i just gleaned the thread

ok i will read. I tried the 9.04 beta but it was far worse than 8.10. Also i couldnt install the ati driver and had to use the one that ubuntu provided.

your saying that the ubuntu provided driver is supposed to work better?

I see here they are claming t oget rid of the tearing. I will try this in a bit

do you know if i just follow the directions here http://www.x.org/wiki/radeon

or do i need to download additional stuff?

im saying that after a quick glance at the thread, its possible that the Xorg open ati driver will work without a problem, i dont have a good ati card, i have a 3300, a 3450 and a x1300 and they all work fine with ATI drivers so I cant really replicate what you have going on.
