Anyone having problems with video "hiccups" in Battlefield 1942?

I have a P4 2ghz system, 256mb PC2100 crucial ram, XP SP1, and a GeForce2 Pro 64mb. I haven't overclocked anything as this is a pretty fresh system. I've tried Detonator 40.1 drivers and everything below; same issue. I've tried every resolution, setting, etc.; same issue. It's less noticeable on low resolutions (800x600/640x480 :(), but it's still there.

It seems the video simply "hiccups" when I move around. If I'm simply observing, it doesn't appear to happen. If I move around, it will go smooth, then slow, then smooth, then slow. Flying produces jerky video as well. I didn't have this problem on my P3 500, 512mb pc133 crucial ram, GeForce2 Pro 64mb, Win2k box though!

I'm disappointed as I wanted to play this game in all it's glory; full detail and at least 1152x864x32. Anyone have any ideas? I've updated all my drivers...

On a side note, I know it doesn't mean much, but my 3DMarks 2k1 are about 5000. Not as high as I would've thought.

Thanks all. I ask in this forum because I know so many of you play BF1942.... as you should!

Yeah I get these. And the whole thing will slow to crawl after a while (usually after 2 or 3 rounds). Makes me think there's a memory leak in either the 1.1 patch or the 40 detonator drivers.

Its internet lag, nothing to do with your video card. Happens to me all the time, just packet loss. The netcode for this game isnt all too good, I cant imagine what playing on a 56k must be like.

Unless it happens in single player, then I'm wrong.

That's the first thing I checked; sorry, I should've clarified. This occurs even when starting a local server. I guess that doesn't really rule it out entirely as I am running a server, potentially utilizing the net code of which you speak. I haven't tried it w/ the SP version though...

This wasn't a [noticeable] problem on my older, horribly inferior system though; that's why I'm perplexed.

It it just happened every now and then, that would be ok, but it's constant...

AND I just thought my system was weak. I can play maybe one round before this happens to me.

I am running WinXP
Duron 900Mhz
Geforce2 Ultra
512 PC133

I have only tried at 1024x768 since that is the native resolution for my LCD. It doesn't make a difference if I had the video settings to max or lowest quality. The same thing happens.

I don't know what it is.

Same, although I can't even play a single round. It starts right from the beginning. It's not as noticeable for me in lower resolutions, but it's still there. The video simply jerks, and it's so annoying it makes the game unplayable.

Still what gets me is that this *didn't* happen on my P3 500 system w/ Win2k. :(

will packet loss affect what the ping shows? I'll have like 50 ms ping but it will be choppy as hell...I wasn't sure if this is packet loss or memory leak related. It seems to happen consistently after a couple of rounds.

i played this game a few times on my p3 500 with 256 mb pc133 ram and a radeon 64MB VIVO, after a few rounds i would get a windows message telling me virtual memory is low. so there must be a memory leak i assume?

i couldn't tell if i had hiccups, because my computer ran the game so horribly that the whole thing was a hiccup. if i was in the middle of a large battle, it was unplayable. therefore, i uninstalled it.

Well I just downgraded to Det 30 series drivers and it has gotten better but still occurs to some extent.

I figured it was the Det 40's. Man every other release has fvcking memory leaks. how much ram is on your video card and on your machine?

What do you have your fog distance set to? I set mine at 100% the first time around and after playing for a few days I decided to try to tweak it a little for faster performance. Going down to 80% made a big difference for me.

I've tried every combination of settings, including lowering my visibility. I did try the WHQL certified 30.x detonator drivers, and it still occurred.

It's something w/ XP methinks, because as I said, I didn't have this problem before.

i get a lot of lag. i am using a gainward geforce 3 and a p4 1.6a with 512 mb of ram. i think the game itself has issues. they will have to iron out the bugs sooner or later.

I'm running an Amd 1.2ghz, 512mb ram, Geforce4 TI4400... I get the same darn issue... the game is unplayable, and the demo was perfect... :p

Det 30 and 40's are GeForce 4 only. They run and work like crap on older cards (yes, even the GF3's don't work well with the Det 30's and 40's). That's one thing I'd fix first.

I think I've discovered these hiccups aren't internet lag at all... they're your hard drive loading/caching data. This game uses A LOT of your virtual memory... I found this out tonight... somehow the last time I reinstalled win2k I forgot to make my new 10K III SCSI drive a dynamic disk... I converted and it's easily 10x faster than it was earlier. I also tried making my swap file static @ 150MB instead of the 574 it was on and a message popped up saying I ran out and it was being increased.
This could be bad news for you IDE guys... but I want you to try converting to dynamic disks in 2k/xp assuming you aren't dual booting and are using basic disks right now. Probably won't be as big of a performance gain as it was for me but it can't hurt. :)
Now my slowdowns are caused by my 1.4ghz cpu/8500le video card... was working on getting that tweaked when I got a windows messenger message pop up while playing?!
I've got some more to say about the whole hard drive/game loading files issue but I'm tryin to figure some other things out right now. ;)

Same here. I get the hiccups and pauses also.

I have a P4 2.26@2.72, 512MB DDR, GF4 Ti4600, and cable (I ping 20-50 to the servers I play on).

Still, pauses up the ying yang. And we arent the only ones. Seems as though this game isnt quite up to scratch :(
Strange though because the demo ran beautifully.

Another thing you guys can try:
Open up your C:\program files\ea games\battlefield 1942\settings\profiles\custom\ directory
Open Video.con in a word editor and change the game.setMenuViewdistance to 400 instead of 100. Save the file and make it read only. Do the same with the Videocustom.con file. This makes it so you can see FARTHER in the game and reduce the amount of fog your card has to add... helped mine out some. Going to try other settings like 200. I just found 400 on another website so I figured it was a starting point.
No more fogginess. :)

- Ack doesn't like 200.. jerk jerk jerk jerk hehe. Maybe I should try a really high # so the whole map is visible? ;)
- Bleh I'm just gonna leave it on 100. :)

Yes, I get these too. Usually, when the game retarts, they go away, so I think it's server side and not client side. Everyone knows the netcode for BF1942 is not top-notch.

Otherwise, it's smooth as silk on my machine: 1024x768@32 with 2x FSAA/2x AF on a Radeon 7500/P4 2.0A.

I've noticed the same problem. Here's what I'm running:

P4 1.6a@2.4
516mb RDRAM
GF4 ti4200 128mb

Most of the lag comes when I'm trying to watch a plane flying overhead. The plane will jump around to the point where I can't even properly shoot it. :(
