Okay so I have the official Oct 22 release copy of Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. It was running fine (except for Avira web guard which has been fixed)... but last night I noticed a bunch of updates came from Microsoft.

All I am seeing is event ID 7000 and the steam client shutting down.. all network settings from my vista 64 install are the same so I know the firewall is good... my windows firewall is disabled at the moment.

Gonna hit the steam forums as well, but seeing as left 4 dead is popular around here I though I would ask here as well.

I have a final copy I got at a Microsoft Developer Conference a few weeks ago installed, 64-bit version, running fine. I think I have MS updates turned on, I'll have to check tho. Not sure why their stuff would break Steam, but it's no unprecedented.

Maybe try to reinstall Steam? You shouldn't need to reinstall any games, just install Steam over the top of the existing copy.

I just upgraded a few days ago to Windows 7 x64. I haven't had any problems with Steam, Left 4 Dead or any other games so far. I did see those updates come through this morning but I didn't get a chance to look at them yet. So unless they broke something, you shouldn't be having issues.

I use an admin account. I will reinstall the client and see how it behaves.

My next step will be to look at the packets and see what it is trying to hit and whether it is getting a reply.

All I know is I was playing L4D on monday and I can't play now.

hmm reinstalled and now it just sits at an update screen showing 0%. Gotta be a firewall issue. Windows firewall is disabled now... my linksys vpn/router has everything opened since I am using a static ip and the rules are already in place.

I guess I get to check out the Windows 7 network monitor.

When I installed STeam it sat there for awhile at 0%, then all of a sudden jumped to 100%.
Not sure why.

Mine did that to. It is working now but it still takes a long time to connect to steam. I will tweak the firewall more tomorrow.

The saga continues. Back to thinking it is a windows issue. When I start steam there is no network activity. Nothing happens, but the process loads in memory. I go to taskmg, shut down the client, restart it.... then I see network traffic contacting steam servers. Still slower than I would like though. But for now I can get it working.

Still using the 7100 build, don't have my retail release, but I haven't had issues with steam.
