Wow, I always thought it was a nutritional deficiency. It's kind of reassuring to know that it's not.

why should I take his word? he doesn't reference any of his "facts", which is a bit of a red flag.

(I trust my own experience. i.e., I had white spots on ginfernails, read in several books they can be due to zinc deficiency, took zinc, spots went away, stopped taking zinc, spots came back, started taking zinc/ a multivitamin, spots went away for good.)

Hey it was just the first link on google. However I do find it odd that when I search for zinc deficiency white spots on the nails is not listed as a symptom. At least not from what I've read so far. Seems like such an obvious sign would top the list.

Your spots "went away". Did they dissapear or grow out?

I get it whenever I injure my finger under the nail.

I don't get them when I don't have injured fingers.

I knew the reason for this... but I totally forget.

I've always been told it happens when you haven't been getting enough calcium. I think it was just a trick to get me to drink my milk when I was little though.

btw, it worked, and I'm gonna use it on my kids :)

Yea you could say, "OMG Honey, look what you've done to your self! DRINK MORE MILK quickly! Your nails are going to fall off!" lol

Which multivitamin was that? Are you still taking it?

I recall reading/hearing that it was a zinc deficiency years ago. So I started taking zinc. New spots didn't stop until my dosage of zinc neared 80mg a day! That was way too much.

I'm currently only taking 30mg a day and it hasn't helped at all with the spots.

Wow, of course the pics on the net are the most extreme cases!

What about the halo at the base of my right thumb? See pic for reference. That whitish semicircle at the base? Most of my other nails don't have it, and if they do (left thumb, right index) its a lot smaller!

That's only if it's on all your nails and they've been there a year or more... usually it's a few spots and the result of an injury.
