Anyone have the skinny on Neverwinter Nights?

I'm told the publisher dropped it. Does this mean the end for the most anticipated game of all time?

That'd be a shame, if true.

I wouldnt go quite so far as to say it's the most anticipated game of all time, but it's certainly got a very large number of people eagerly awaiting it. Myself included.

Here is the basic idea of what I know:
BioWare, developers of NeverWinter Nights recently cancelled their publishing contract with Interplay whom had published all of BioWare's numerous other prior D&D RPG's.
This doesnt come as a surprise really as BioWare fired off a lawsuit against Interplay about a month ago.

BioWare is continuing development of NWN and all other games that were planned, they've said that NWN is not being delayed and will still be released at the same time as originally scheduled.
I imagine BioWare will either pick up another publisher, or they'll self-publish the game themselves.

Either way, it's in no way "the end" of NWN as it's still going to be released.... it seems likely that this should have little impact at all on NWN.

I hope they quietly found a new publisher before they cancelled with Interplay. The idea that they're now going to look for a publisher, or think about publishing it themselves, doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

But who owns the licence to the D&D system? It can't be a small company like BioWare. If Interplay owns it, how will BioWare be able to publish the game with anyone else?

Wizards of the Coast owns D&D, and if I'm not mistaken Interplay (or Bioware or whoever) only obtains a license or agreement of some sort to use the system? If that's the case then it's just a matter of Bioware making a new deal with Wizards. Even if the deal doesn't come through, they could still use the D20 System (which is open license) and just make some minor changes to their existing system.... just my 2 cents on this matter.

if it ever gets released it will be awsome or so i hear..... im very bummed to hear that they are having problems

interplay had the rights to publish the D&D game, not Bioware. There are three parties involved, so it will be a mess to say the least to get this published.

The issue is simple. Bioware wants to be paid for back work and royalties. Why continue to work for someone who won't pay you? I'm sure Bioware won't have any problems finding another publisher for a proven game design and sales generator.

I'm sure many publishers would want to publish this one, but if Interplay has the rights to it, it's going to be a mess.

I guess we just have to hope that BioWare jumped ship knowing they had alternative arrangements. If the idea is that they're now going to look for a publisher...

From what I understand, no company has exclusive publishing rights to D&D anymore. I think they give them out to different companies on a game-by-game basis.
