Anyone have the new LG Chocolate (vx8550) ?

So my contract ends tomorrow with VZW and I need to get a new phone and a new plan. This looks like the only halfway cool phone in the lineup. I don't care about mp3s or cameras or any of that stupid shit, I just want a slim cool phone that has good sound quality.

Reviews seem pretty good right now but it only just came out so.. if any of you all have one and can give first hand experience that'd be ace.

The other one I'm looking at is the Samsung SCH-u740 which has very similar reviews albeit 3 times the amount since it's been out for awhile.

I just signed a contract with VZW and the reseller warned me away from the Chocolate. He actually suggested some of the more "blase" phones for good sound quality and phone durability...I ended up going with the enV (VX9900)b/c I see myself adding the data plan and using it as a modem.

This is the new one that just came out right? They offer two chocolates now. Did he say why he thought that way?

Thanks for the heads up

My vx8600 (flip phone version of chocolate) is a very nice small and thin phone. Only problem is that people have told me the mic quality isn't that great

I have the vx8500 (really really really similar), I like it. Although it is really easy for my keys to scratch the screen when they are in my pocket. I also like the mp3 player although it is a little slow for my tastes (interface wise)

He based his opinion of the Chocolate on complaints he'd seen firsthand at his store. The front radial dial, button problems, & general build quality.

Don't get a chocolate. The battery life and reception is horrible. The phone looks and functionality isn't bad, but overall, it isn't very good. I would stick with something more durable like a lg VX8300. That is LG's flagship handset right now and has the best reception among cdma phones from recent reviews.

don't get a chocolate if you do any sort of txt messaging. small buttons, cramped layout. the phone looks good and has a good screen. that's it.

I use text messaging and phone features.. that's about it.

The VX8300 looks ridiculous to try and text message someone:
Select "Message"
Select "New Msg"
Select "TXT Msg"
Select "Add"
Select "From Contacts"
Search your contact list
Select "MARK"
Select "DONE"
Select "OK"

gah...

why can't there be a cool looking phone that has good sound quality?

I like my enV...I got the orange one since I'm one of the few Auburn Tigers up here in Big-10 land. 🙂

Edit: It's a bit bulky though so keep that in mind if size is a factor.

i got the orange one. the sound is good, i use it while im onsite working in other offices. sounds much better with the headset, but still good sitting on the desk. be prepared to donload some new ringtones tho, the ones it comes with really bite.

I have the VX8300. This phone is hands down the best phone I've ever had. The battery on it lasts me 1 week typically and I keep it on vibrate mode all the time.

Getting a fancy/cool looking phone over it's actual usability is dumb as all can be.

My girlfriend got the VX8600 but I used it for a few days before we could swap our phones and I would have the 8300, and yah it looked cool and I really liked it, however it had little things about it that bugged me.

Then we swapped phones and about a week later, I was over the fact that I didn't have a phone that looked as nice as hers but worked somewhat better.

You get over the "coolness" of phones about a week after you have em. (atleast I did heh)

I have the VX8500 chocolate and I like it. Only complain is the battery life - but then again, it was free.

My wife recently upgraded to a Chocolate and likes it - aesthetics are very important to her.

I had the SCH-u740 for about a month and absolutely loved it - until I accidentally stepped on it and seem to have ruptured the interior LCD screen. No idea how much that would/will cost to fix.

I also have a VX8600 and I like it a lot. I only use it for calls. It has a nice form factor and seems to have good call quality, reception and battery life. Reviews complained about the flat keypad which may be a problem for no-look texting.

i have the new chocolate, its great. the buttons are smaller than usual and have awkward placement - its quite difficult to text efficiently with one hand. its mp3/sound capabilities are meh, i'd rather use my ipod to listen to music. the battery life is awesome, about a week on standby and several hours of talk time. the touch wheel is kind of silly, its very sensitive even on the lowest settings.

if you prefer slide-phones, then the chocolate is for you. if you prefer flip phones, get something like the krazr

I have an 8300 as well. Battery lasts forever, and as a phone it's great. But it doesn't do much else - it's pretty basic.

I got the motorola krzr k1m and it's pretty good. It's a bit slow though. As with all verizon phones, their custom firmware locks everything and strips a lot of functionality. In two years, I'll probably dump verizon.
