Anyone have this cd-rom drive? Do you have problems with it. Will it read all cd-r's without problems?

First off 72x has got to be false. Second it is the worst reader you can find. Do some searching you can find tons of warnings about this drive. I'm sure it's already been discussed to death here. I have one btw, one of the stupidest purchases I've made!

Mine died after three months of use -- I'll never buy another Kenwood cd-rom drive:|

Uhh I have a 72X, best CD-Rom i've ever owned.
First of all download the new firmware it fixes most of those CDR problems.

Looks like the 72x is going EOL so it's not a good choice since the (evil) box swap "retail repair" option wil be gone

Get an ASUS 50x or if you want DVD too just get a Toshiba 12/40, they are both pretty good CD-Roms

Laterz,
Nore

PS: I still recommend the Kenwood 72X

yes the 72x has problems with a cdr now and then, even with the new firmware. But it's an ULTRA quiet ULTRA fast cdrom. There have been a few people whine and whine about thiers. I love mine to death.
Toshiba makes very reliable cd readers. My 40x scsi is loud, but it's a great drive. STAY AWAY FROM CREATIVE 52X!!!! I've heard from several local companies that they dont carry them because of too many RMAs, and I burned one up in about 3 months. Ive had my Kenwood for 4 months or so now, and it's still a real ass kicker.
I dont see where people get off calling it the "worst reader around" What a maroon.

I too own a Kenwood 72X, since the day they showed up on store shelves. Never had any problems with it (other than it's a bit slower on CDRs) and have kept the bios updates current...I love it...quiet, dependable (for me) and extracts audio quickly (using EAC I never have any problems)...I wouldn't trade this drive for anything else. Then again, maybe I just got lucky ;)

I have the 52x Kenwood drive. Actually I have 3. They are very fast and I have no problems reading cd's with the lastest firmware. However they are crap and I've broken 2 so far. The oldest drive is about 8 months. Overall they are very quick but don't last long. I wouldn't reccomend getting one, I would get a Plextor 40x reader.

I'll second the vote for the Asus 50x
I don't know how good/bad the 72x Kenwood is but I've heard too many bad reports and not eenough good ones so I dodged it...the Asus works great, reads anything I throw at it, nice and fast, not to loud, and it has good DAE speed..though you said you don't care.

the 52s had problems that i understand were "supposed" to be fixed in the 72, but there are still some lingering problems (like the cdr thing). Anyways so far I've come across a whopping 2 disks that gave me problems, both were cheap cdrs.

I personally love my 72x Kenwood Drive. I will agree that there are faulty units out there, I had one, but hell just return it until you do get a decent one. It is the fastest and quietest drive on the market. Installing any of the windows flavors simply FLIES on this drive. I've had problems with a couple CD-R's but very few. Any that I do have problems with I just throw in my TDK veloCD and it fixes it right up. The 72x has effectively the same amount of noise as a 24x cd-rom so it's very quiet.

If you go with the Asus 50x you might as well put a jet engine in your case too. That's one of the loudest CD-Rom's I've ever heard, next to the Creative CD-Roms which are total junk.

If you have your mind set on NOT getting the Kenwood, the Toshiba 48x drive is very quiet, and extremely reliable reading all CD's including CD-R's. If I was to only have one cd-rom in my system and didn't have my cd-rw drive to read with, the Toshiba would be the one single drive I'd own, it's awesome. That would be my choice next to the Kenwood.

If you have SCSI, then without question the Plextor 40x is the drive to own. It does 38x DAE (for a 40x read drive that's incredible) and it's well worth the money, grab one.

Yet another good eval for the Kenwood 72X. I've had mine for almost a year, & I love it. Dead silent, & the fastest thing out there. Good combination if you ask me.

i've had problems with the 72x in the past, however that was before all the new firmware. i used it at work and it didn't read ANY cd-r's at all, and i've heard more reports about them failing at CD-Rs then i'd like to.

however the new firmware is supposed to fix most of it, as well as toning it down to a 68x read however much more stable at reading CD-Rs. you could give it a shot, just just be wary. i don't think any cd-rom now would be practical, w/ dvd drives going up to 40x i'd hate to waste a slot on a third optical device.

It can read "most" of my CD-R/RW disks, but not up to par with TEAC, Toshiba Acer in my experience. Its nevertheless, the fastest and the most quiet CD-ROM drive in the market, all these talk about them being crap is pure garbage, feel free to ignore.

I have a Kenwood 72X and its the best CD-ROM I have ever owned. I had a 12/24 Toshiba, but was too slow. Then I got an ASUS 50X, and the damn thing was SO loud. I got rid of it and now I have the Kenwood. It is extremely fast, and I have never found a CD-R it can't read. I would recommend them :)

EDIT: It's SO quiet too. I can't even hear it.

I would go with the Toshiba 1502. It is a DVD drive and is listed as the best reader for CloneCD. It is fast and quiet too. Just my $0.02.

The Kenwood is a heap of crap!!

Crappy transfer off CDR and CDRW (even with latest firmware) topped off with a very short life. I used to think mine was great until it crapped out after about 11 months of use. I'll never buy one again!

So far my 72x is working like a champ. Does anyone know why I get "errors" when ripping using EAC or CDDAE on the Kenwood, but the Plextor 12x gives me 0 ?

I bought a Kenwood 72X and returned in it less than 24 hours. It had serious problems reading burned CD's and that's how I do my back-ups. I got an Acer 50X and it's great. I've had it for almost a month and so far it's read everything I've thrown at it.

So I should get the Toshiba 48x? It wasn't one of the fastest on CDSpeed2000

My creative 52x (5233) just died on me, don't know what happened, but no more power going to it. No light that turns on when the computer powers nothing works on it. I've tried it on a different computer to still no luck.

LXi, I was looking for an answer/input to the question I asked, not positive feedback on how you like your drive.
