I beleive the fee is waived for the first year. With the 15,000 mile first purchase bonus, its worth it to keep for a year. Just cancel it next year before the new year membership fee is charged. You should have racked up enough miles in addition to the bonus by then to get a free domestic ticket.
I personally prefer and have the Starwood AmEx which only carries a $35 per year fee and you can transfer starpoints to most major airlines FF programs for no charge at a 1:1 ratio. They give 10,000 bonus points for first purchase also. And the first year fee is waived.

Do you happen to know the ratio for my card? As in, how many miles do I need to get a roundtrip ticket for a 4000 mile trip?
