Anyone have some suggestions on what to do for New Year's in Los Angeles for my gf and I?

Hello,

I just moved to Santa Monica this past summer and my girlfriend and I will be spending New Year's here followed by a trip to Las Vegas on the 3rd-6th of January . So I'm wondering what exactly to do, as I've asked around, but haven't heard anything particularly spectacular. I tried to get some tickets to the Lion King Broadway play, but I can't get more then 1 ticket for the 31st . So does anyone know what we could do? One thing I was wondering is whether there would be fireworks near the Santa Monica Pier, as it would be cool to go to the beach and watch them

Any ideas?
