I need to drop in a security system as my neighborhood has been targeted for robberies. (3 in 6 months on my block, this happened last year too).

I have the security system down, just wondering on an IP camera.

This would be for indoor use, I will place it in my main room and mostly use it to just check on things when away from home.

I am not looking to throw more than $200 at this as it will be very secondary to the rest of the system.

because people like to go and bring up 'why do IP cameras before you have a security system/etc' in place.

 
No, I was wondering more whether you already bought a camera system and if so what type. Or did you just choose a system and haven't bought it. In any case, I'd recommend getting a pre-built system for home use. Generally you won't be needing any pro-level equipment.

Remember that your cameras have to be PTZ capable. I do not recommend wireless systems. Wired is always best because once you're up and running, it's pretty much maintenance free. Things can go wrong but generally it's stable. In the case of wireless, the cameras can lose connection intermittently unless you have very good coverage or run a lot of repeaters, in which case you might as well go with wired systems.

Whatever camera you're using, see if the seller can provide example videos so you can get an idea of what you'll be recording.

One option to look for is a camera that is capable of PoE (Power over Ethernet) which will simplify the wiring.

A computer based DVR system can also act as a server for your PTZ system so you can log in, control, and view your cameras.

Generally, you get what you pay for. Those $200'ish cameras will be no match for dedicated PTZ cameras costing $1000 and up in terms of recording quality. Housing is also an issue if you're installing these cameras outside. You'll need a camera with weatherproof housing or you'll need to buy a housing for it. This costs money.
 
got you...but i have info in the OP...not outdoors and looking to be around $200. It's going to be a secondary deal to the real security to just look around the house.

I was planning on BlueIris or something similar. I just want one maybe two cameras.
 
I'm not that familiar with the BlueIris software (or most DVR software to be honest). I was just wondering more on your setup. However, for home use, generally you won't need anything fancy.

The lowest end PTZ capable cameras are roughly $200'ish while regular security cameras run pretty cheap.

In any case, researching your question through the below forums might be better since they specialize in CCTV systems.
