Anyone have experience with kidney stones?

Took my dad to the ER last night, a CAT scan shows a 3.5mm stone in one of his ureters. The doctor gave him some narcotic pain killers and sent him home to see if it would pass. He's pretty nauseated right now so we're having trouble keeping liquids down.

Assuming we can keep food and liquids down, is there anything we can give him to help dissolve the stone? Any other advice?

I'm waiting for a call back from a doctor on the same question, btw. Just looking for other advice.

Nope, no meds will dissolve them. 3.5mm is small enough to pass, although it's going to be painful. Your doc should have given him some anti-nausea meds in addition to the pain pills as that's a very common symptom. Ask the doc for a prescription when he calls back.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I can't imagine having a rock in my ureter!! ouch :(

I doubt there is anything you could drink to help dissolve a stone. Otherwise it would have dissolved in the kidney. I'm no doctor, but if your kidney's are filtering out urine strong enough to dissolve a stone, then something might be wrong. Just give it time, it will pass, no pun intended.

I've had a bunch.

The best solution is for him to drink so much water he thinks he is going to drown.

Yeah Halfront mentioned it. Make sure he drinks lots of fluids. After puking so many times you become dehydrated and end up with a bladder infection and what not. Really nasty stuff..
