Anyone have experience w/ Rosewill or Aspire PSUs?

Looking for a new PSU to replace my Antec 430 (maybe going to get a 6800 Ultra, so 480+W it is, isn't it?). Have been doing the research, but only the popular brands seem to get the press and cannot find much info on the Rosewill psus:
Aspire ATX-MR500W
and
Rosewill RE502-BLK
They seem to be made by the same manufacterer, but I am not sure who that is. They have real nice 12v rails at 34A and the Rosewill is $46 shipped right now. Plus sleeved wires for a little less clutter as a bonus. But as always, the pictures and specs cannot tell you the feel or solidity of the product. Anyone have any first hand experience?

The couple of reviews I read seem to indicate the Aspire has a somewhat weak 12V voltage (hovering around 11.7 - 11.8. Don't know if I like that too much 🙁 Edit: but a couple other reviews have strong rails at 12+V. Really looking for some first handle comments on stability with a highly overclocked power sucking system.

I don't know anything about Rosewill so I can't comment on that. But Aspire isn't exactly a quality brand, their products seem to vary from decent to pretty awful. Either way I wouldn't take any of those over the Antec you already have, why are you replacing it?

BTW, 11.7v isn?t even a 1/4 of a % drop, it's well within spec and is perfectly fine its defiantly not "bad news.

I'm not going to replace the Antec, but just moving it to another system I'm building (Christmas gift - decently powerful Cadd machine for my father). So I'm in the market for a new psu among other things.

I may or maynot pickup a 6800 Ultra for my new build, but seeing the power consumption of graphics cards these days (and most likely the future) is not going down, I'm looking for alot of juice in my next psu purchase.

Antec, Enermax, and the other popular psu have alot of reviews and user comments on likes and dislikes all over these forums, but nothing on the Rosewill. I'm leaning towards a Sparkle/Fortron 530W, Antec 550, or one of a few Enermax models. But I came across this Rosewill in my research, and its specs have peaked my interest.

I have this aspire PSU powering my system right now.... I didn't pick it out, though, it was... 'extra' (more on that in a minute)

I haven't stressed it with cpu overclocks or anything, but the voltages seem OK.
Corecenter reports:
+12v @ 12.32 (or 12.16, according to MBM)
+5v @ 5.03
3.3v @ 3.31
don't seem to change much

HOWEVER

The reason why it's 'extra' is, me and my dad were building a system for a neighbor. This PSU was included in the case we bought. The build was unstable for some reason, and we decided to try a different power supply. Bought an antec truepower PSU to test it out. My dad 'says' stability noticably improved with the Antec in the system (High-end P4-based). I can't tell you, I didn't try it out.

But it's been working fine for me.

BTW, 12v @ 11.7 is 2.5%, not 0.25%. Still within spec.

I believe the Aspire that you have is basically the same as that Rosewill w/out all the lights (my teenagers would like them, but it's not their cash). The picture is hard to read off of Newegg, but I believe that tag on it says 12v - 34A. And the system you have should provide a pretty good power draw.

Has it been stable under gaming for you?

yup within spec, but I wouldnt vouch for it, I have had problems with psu's running around 11.7

Sparkle/Fortons are great as are Antec and Enermax, the Aspire in fisheye's post is pure junk (sorry 🙁

When it come's to PSU's I tend to assume they are junk unless proven otherwise.

Check out the Tagan TG-480 it's one of the best PSU's money can buy. Here is a review.

The Rosewill sure is tempting...looks good, no bad reviews...do some googling. I've read some bad things about the Apire PSU (and since I'm buying an ASpire case, maybe I'll get this PSU too...save myself some money). On the other hand, 500W for 45 bucks seems kinda suspicious...

yup, but rosewill seems to be trying to build a name for themselves so...

If you look closely at the newegg pictures, I believe they are the same psu.

Operandi: Thanks for the link on the Tagan. Pretty nice.

I've got that Rosewill model.....very nice-looking, sleeved wires. The fan it came with had a nasty clicking sound. I thought the blades were hitting something, so I took it apart. It was a bad fan...replaced it with a generic Power logic fan from CompUSA. Working just fine right now...

Blue: Is it relatively quiet while in use? If it is not too much trouble, could you post the voltage of each rail? Do you use it in a system with a heavy power draw? Is it heavy and solidly built? TIA

Well my Rosewill is in a project computer I'm working on, so it's not comparable to a standard setup. The PSU is very sturdy, with thick aluminum sides. And if you use it normally, with the fan control on low, it's very quiet. (I'm hoping the fan in the one I got is not typical). I do not put much of a load on this system....but it bench-marks without any problems, and runs cool.

Voltages stay stable at all times....12.50, 5.08, 3.22.

I am using the Rosewill PSU fan to also cool a P4-2.66, by a direct duct to the CPU heatsink....photo album

I believe Rosewill is Newegg's inhouse packaging division as only Newegg and ChiefValue (another newegg satellite) are the only sites selling Rosewill.
.bh.

I beleive Rosewill is owned by NewEgg.

If you check the WHOIS of their site, it gives an admin email to an @abspc.com address, which is a newegg company. Ironically enough, abs PC is located on Rose Hills Drive...... *chuckle*

FWIW...I had my Rosewill PSU apart replacing the fan. Printed on the board in small letters was "Young Year". A google search found Young Year Electronics. The PSU in the link looks to be my Rosewill PSU. Virtually identical looking, same specs, etc. Perhaps this company makes some of the Rosewill brand products sold by Newegg?

I was under the assumption that Rosewill was a division of AOpen. All links I tried to their website however do not work at this time. I went to their site in the past and it did mention it was affiliated with AOPEN. Newegg and its affiliates may have some interest in the company. They certainly seem to give the Rosewill stuff prime time.

I have the same PSU as fisheye (the Aspire). If I could do it over again, I wouldn't have gotten the Aspire. Right now the +12V is at +11.52, and has dipped down into the +11.4X range during an intense game of HL2 with an overclocked 6800, 3000+, and DDR500 RAM. My stability has not been spotless.

AOpen is one of the few companies that offer marketing co-op dollars to most sellers (generally only the big companies get co-op dollars- these dollars explain which items make it to the front page on teh Egg and other large sites). AOpen will throw cash at your advertising if you include them as part of your ad. I'm not familiar with the specifics, but this could explain the association you saw. Also, some of their parts are manufactured by AOpen. Note: AOpen does not manufactur everything Rosewill sells- AOpen cases in the States are always found with Fortron-Source PSU's.

The second item, is that there is no way "Rosewill" is manufacturing any of its goods- I doubt they built a proverbial "hole in the wall" out in China to produce this stuff. I've seen the PSU's identified as Deer from the U/L codes, CD drives identified as AOpens, etc. They are simply buying at a higher level than the traditional reseller, meaning they provide the support instead of AOpen/whoever on the retail side, bringing a lower price to teh Egg.

Dont get any of those. OCZ > All

Team Akiba broke the world clock frequency record with the 520Watt version. They just released a 600Watt version 🙂 )
