Anyone have experience moving to San Francisco?

I live in South Bay but just got a job near the Montgomery station so I'm trying to move to the city close by work. Which neighborhood should I live in? Thinking of Nob Hill. I've been told it's crazy trying to get a place and people would show up and get into a bidding war. So any tips on what I should do? Hoping to spend $1800 or less on a studio. I will also need to rent parking for a couple of months before I decide to sell my car.

Haight Ashbury is a great neighborhood. Cheaper than downtown and peaceful. Street Parking is also doable. Montgomery station is a 15 minute muni ride on the n-Judah.

Just stay where you are and commute, much better deal in the end for you. I know people that commute from San Jose, so yours won't be that bad.

I'm trying to leave this city, believe me, you haven't missed much. Actually, since you're from the south bay, might be an upgrade for you.

Well, most of my friends live in the city and I'd like to experience the city life for a couple of years at least. None of my friends have cars so I'm always the one driving up when we hangout.

I drove from San Francisco to Menlo Park for work for about 4 years and IT SUCKED HORSE BALLS even without the extra distance to San Jose. I say this as someone who loves to drive...just not during rush hour traffic day after day.

You guys telling him to commute from SJ to SF are nuts or have never actually done it yourselves. If you do it by car, prepare to be sitting in your car a minimum of an hour each way and pay a ton of money for gas. If you do it by train, multiply that commute time by 1.5 or 2x unless your work schedule allows you to catch one of the baby bullets and you never have to work late.

As for neighborhood recommendations, I'll go with my usual recommendation of Glen Park where I lived for 3 years. It's a decent area close enough to a BART station to get you to the Mission or downtown for nightlife while while not being a total parking hell like either of those areas are. I think Muni's a complete joke of a transit system which is why I recommend finding something near BART instead.

It takes longer than 15 minutes. It'll run you about half an hour minimum.

You might get lucky and find a place, but if you're having trouble finding an apartment you might need to look into hiring a broker to help. Though, I have a friend who not too long ago was able to find a studio in Nob Hill without much of an issue, I think he pays more than $1,800 a month.

Dude, he said south bay, which probably is Milpenis. From Milpenis to where he will be working is just a "short" hop on the Bart. It beats out aggravation of living in the overpriced city.

Assuming he's in Milpitas, that means he has to drive to Fremont which can be 15 minutes in good traffic or double that or longer with lousy traffic. Then he has to hop on BART which from my quick check of the website is just under an hour long trip. His trip on BART would be $5.65 each way daily, before taking into account how much it costs to park at the BART station.

In short, he wouldn't be saving any money living in the South Bay instead of San Francisco even before you factor how valuable his time is. Personally I'd pay to be closer to my friends and not have to commute a minimum of hour and a half each way every day AND get reamed with the cost of BART and parking.

san francisco is ten pounds of grapes in a five pound bag. Prepare to be beat down financially and psychologically.

any downsides to living in milpitas? seems like it's close to the major highways in the south bay.

There is a landfill near it and it can smell bad when its hot. There's also nothing to there.

There is a Chinese restaurant called china palace open until 3am that has some great Chinese fried chicken. If you are drunk and order wrong you will be disappointed

Everyone seems to have their own opinion on whether they like or recommend living in SF or not which is fine. My friends have lived there for the past 5 years and love it. My dilemma is which part of SF I should live in, not whether I should commute or not..
