I'm thinking about sending out a group email to people on my project for a happy hour. I'm a newbie so I just want to make sure it's well received and people actually show

Subject: Happy Hour at xxxx

Come join us for drinks and food this Tuesday at blahblah!

Location: xxx street

Please forward this invite to anyone else that I missed

Thanks,

how many people are we talking? I think it would be much more likely that they go if you talked to them in person about it

probably around 8-10.

other people usually send emails out so I'd rather just send it like them and forget it. Up to them if they want to show or not

If you want them to go, send the email and mention it in person since I assume you work with them. if you don't really care, just send the email and forget

email is good, however; mention it to the bar/place ahead of time with a headcount. You don't want to show up with too many or overlapping another large event sometimes.

Also sometimes you can get some perks (VIP area, drink specials, etc).

My friends are a bunch of alcoholics :) It's not rare to get a happy hour invite via text message.

You're overthinking this. Just ask a few people if they're interested on a certain day, and if it looks like a few people will go, send an email out to everyone else. That at least gives you an idea of what day is convenient for most. You work in Rosslyn, right? Continental has a pretty decent happy hour and is a fun place, so if you can walk there from the client site, all the better.

It's hard to screw up a Friday happy hour, but don't take it personally if people can't or don't want to go. It just happens, although in consulting you'll tend to get more takers because there are more people you work with that live to work and not vice versa. I don't go to a lot of work functions myself, even though I do like my team. It's just that when the end of the week rolls around, I'd prefer to spend time with the people I haven't seen for 45-60 hours that week.

Talk to a few people informally first and get them to agree to go. Then send a meeting invitation (not email):

Hi everyone,

A few of us are headed out to <place x> for drinks and food this Tuesday at blahblah. Hope you can make it!

Location: xxx street

Please feel free to forward this invitation to anyone that I missed

Thanks,

(Note that invite is a verb, not a noun, hence the change to invitation.)

When you're working on the project say "let's end early today and go get drunk."
Doubt anyone would object.

It's very common for people at my work to schedule HH's with each other (individuals or groups).

OP the email is perfect, casual and to the point.

Up to them if they want to show or not

so why not use their previous email as a template and quit being a creeper

We have a "social committee" here @ work that plans all this stuff for us. I just wait for emails from people like you.

Good god no. The last thing I want to do with me free time is spend it with the people I work with.
