did some googling and there are dozens of packages out there all claiming to be the best. anyone have experiance with something like this? software package recomendations?

There was some discussion on this forum some time ago about this. The consensus was that unless you have the original track you will not be able to remove vocal sounds. However, some software claims to do this but it is near impossible. I agree that some software has some form of effect on the track but you wont get rid of vocals completely and you will experience sound deteriation of some sort I would have thought. 🙂

I used a plugin with an old version of WinAMP and it worked flawlessly for two versions of Dave Matthews Band - Satellite.

I was amazed, though I totally understand how the algorithm would only work with music recorded in a specific way.

I have tried removing vocals from several songs using Audacity. I forget the exact process but basically you invert one of the channels so that anything that is directly centered will be canceled out. Results were mixed. It always removed the vocals but sometimes removed to much of the other instruments. Also vocal effects tend to use the right and left channels so you can get strange moments where the vocals reappear.
