I have the er-6s which basically just like the er-6i's except the er-6i's have a bit more bass. They sound great, but with them in you can't hear anything (which can be good or bad depending on situation). However, if you can find the plain er-6s I'd recommend those because they cost quite a bit less and you can just adjust the EQ a bit to make up for the bass. As an alternative check out the shure e2cs or sony ex-71s.

Etymotic phones tend to be more revealing, neutral and have better highs, while Shures have a better low end and a 'fun' sound.

small ear?
Tried all sizes/types of tips they come with? If the supplied ones aren't a good fit I believe you can get other sizes & types for a few bucks from the company. For me, the large rubber ones on my e2cs are a perfect fit (my ears are giant).

They both attenuate outside noise quite well, if you'll be around roads and such it might not be a good idea.

I also have the ER Hands Free Device for my cell and it also rocks.

I have been in the ER Facility and I can tell you as far as sound measurement and reproduction they are top notch. Highly recommend them.

The smallest ones don't form a good seal, and the next ones up keep falling out...ack!

I'd recommend against buy.com; they've screwed me before. Their rating at resellerratings is only 5 or 6, iirc. I agree though that $100 is high; they can be found for $80ish. Try bizrate or froogle, and always check up on the company before plunking down your info. Also keep shipping in mind; it can be $2 or $20.

Yeah, try the foam ones, they're the only ones that work for me.

Oh, and I walk around manhattan all day with my e3c's on. You just have to be visually alert while walking...so I'd say for 99% of people, it's a bad idea (it seems like 99% of the people don't know how to walk on a sidewalk  ). The bonus is you can avoid dealing with bums panhandling, "save the children" beggars, and Greenpeace whiners with ease. Combine with a pair of sunglasses for virtual invisibility.

If you mean walking on pavement, you might not want earphones. They block out so much noise you hear all your internal stuff working. Like your footsteps resonate up your body, the click of your jaw moving, etc.

It's hardly noticable, and a damn sight better than the sounds of the city around you.

The ER6s are kind of "questionable" for the price, I'd say. I own a pair. You pay more for the isolation than the sound quality in the ER6s. The ER4s are more "sound for your buck" so to speak. The sound quality of the ER6 is only marginally better than some cheap Sennheister earbuds. A bit more clear, but you'll notice the difference more in the ER4.

Also, if you are walking quickly or running, or similar, aside from actual safety issues of not hearing what's happening around you, there is the problem where the cord is microphonic and as such when it hits you in the chest, you hear it.
