I occasionally hear that this is possible, but not sure how I'd go about doing it...

Does anyone here have DSL internet service, even though you're not paying for a local phone line?

Currently I'm paying $50/mo for DSL, and then $24 a month for my local phone line - even though I don't even have a phone plugged into the wall. I don't see any reason why this SHOULDN'T be possible, but I figure there's a 95% chance that if I call my phone co and try to explain what I want to do, they'll botch it up and turn off all my service.

Any thoughts?

Only way I see it possible is if you find a company that runs a dedicated line. I had Sprint ION and they came and installed a completely seperate line, man did I love that service...speeds were amazing.

uhh... but i thought the dsl service is totally separate from phone service. i thought dsl just needs the physical hardware, not the service... so you shoudl just cancel that phone line's number, no? the dsl should still work.

I would like to believe that, but considering that all 3 of my DSL providers (over the last 3 years) have asked me for the phone # that the DSL is going to be installed on, I'm guessing there is SOME correlation there. I'm sure there is technically a way to "seperate" the two services but I just have this bad feeling that if I try, I'll never get it straightened out again...

I know lots of people in the same situation.. no need for a home phone, but they have DSL and thus have a home phone line. ???

No, you don't have to have local phone service for DSL to work. I have confirmed this with at least one DSL tech. It is much easier for them to "test" your line for quality from the DSL office because their systems are setup for the rep to just type in your phone number.

I get my DSL from Bellsouth, and when I got it a year ago, I asked if it was necessary to have local phone service as well, and they said yes. Don't know how it goes now, but this was their answer this time last year.

In verizon land its not possible but call your telco and ask. DSL is just the data services, home phone includes the line required to bring dsl in on. Sucks but thats the way it work here.

Qwest forces you to have phone service to get DSL - it might be different for Business DSL??

It ain't goin to happen.

The line into your house is still there regardless of whether you use it for voice or not.
