I'm planning on getting the asus p4s8x board but I have a few questions

1. Is it stable it is with DDR 400 ram?
2. Does it over clock well?
3. Are there any conflicts or issues with usb 2.0 or firewire?
4. Anyone gunna run an official asus 04s8x thread? hehe ;)

from reviews..

1. no, it seems like all of the current ddr400 mobos are unstable with 400 enabled.

2. i think it's a stroke of luck :) I've seen one review get approx. 300mhz OC on a 2.4b with this board

3. i doubt it

4. i wish :)

I was going to buy an asus last night, but something got me to wait.. the Soltek p4x400 board is 65.00 cheaper (cdn) than the asus..and the only difference is the asus has serial ata.. (different chipset too, but not much difference performance wise)

is 65.00 for serial ata worth it? :p

1. I have not been able to overclock my DDR 333 Corsair Ram to 400 without crashing, but I don't have actual DDR 400, so I don't know if that would work. The reviews so far have not had luck even with 400 rated Ram. Note that there is a bios setting for DDR 400 so it may be possible with future bios updates (or when DDR 400 memory becomes more standardized).

2. Well the CPU can be overclocked but not by a lot and there is no PCI lock, so until a possible bios update to add that, it's not an overclocker's dream board.

3. I don't have any USB 2.0 or firewire devices, so I haven't tested it. There is a USB 2.0 driver on the Asus CD that is needed because XP doesn't automatically recognize the USB 2.0 capability. But, the drivers installed fine and Win XP recognizes the various USB ports as 2.0 enabled and lists the firewire ports.

4. Hopefully.

As for my general impression, I like the board. It is well documented, has a lot of features which will allow expansion (USB 2.0, firewire, AGP 8x, Serial ATA connections with RAID functionality). And it is a pretty good performer (with no overclocking or other tweaking and using a 2.53 P4, DDR 333 Ram, and a GeForce 4 4600, I got almost 12,000 on Mad Onion 3d mark)
