yea, geocaching is awesome

what the hell is it?

to sum it up in a sentence or two, it's basically treasure hunting. People put stuff (knick-knacks, trinkets, toys) all over the world, and with a GPS device your goal is to try and find it. Some geocaches require you to just stop in a park and find it hidden next to a tree. Other geocaches are hidden underwater and require scuba gear, or are hidden in the side of a mountain that takes 2 days to get there.

http://www.geocaching.com/faq/ is a good place to find out where to begin.

http://www.geocaching.com is a great resource with geocaches in your local area.

bike... road and mountain
kayak on the colorado river
go to the park and read
go to coffee shop on main university street and people-watch

There are lots hobbies, and almost all of them cost significant money and that's why i'm always short on $$. here's some of my hobbies that you can consider:

1. Play guitar (or other music instrument). Play drum set if you have firends that play guitars.

2. Biking

3. Building scale models. Build them, paint them, and display them. It's satisfying. You can always find something you like, like military models, automobile/motorcycles, ships, anime resin figues, sci-fi...

4. RC cars. Buy one that you have to build. Upgrade as you go. And when you get good enough you can go to a local race track to race with others.

5. RC plane/helicopter. This is harder and more expensive the RC cars, and you can't play everywhere unlike cars

6. Drawing. I like drawing anime chics/mechas, and race cars

7. Pick up some sorts of sports

it's ok to play games, but life needs balance.

Get in shape with running, biking, or swimming
Learn the Guitar
Read Books.
Watch PBS, Discovery, Animal Planet, and TLC

Yah, they are just about a big a waste of time as playing video games but have one benefitial outcome.

Chicks dig a guy with a good body
Chicks dig a guy that can play the guitar
Chicks dig a guy that can read
Chicks dig a guy that has something to carry a conversation on that intelligent

Chicks don't usually dig a guy that can play a video game.

Well, I qualify for 2 out of 4.

sorry to bump this all the way back up

brewing beer is a great hobby

I actually tried brewing some beer last fall. I fell in love with hefeweizen while I was in Portland for the summer last year (incidentally I am back in portland this summer, Intel) and tried to make some. I researched and planned (which is something I love to do for some reason). I bought a small kit, it made something like ~25 12oz beers. I bought a thing of malt or whatever that said it was hefeweizen. Now the thing is, I didn't like ALL hefeweizens, particularly I didn't like the really hoppy ones so I didn't add any of the hops that came with the hefe ingredients. Made the beer, probably didn't add enough water. Anyway, I followed all instructions (included and from things I found online) and the beer didn't really turn out as expected. It was really hoppy (sweet) and it was very alcoholic (it tasted a lot *stronger* than the standard ~5% american beer, a whole lot stronger). I only drank a couple bottles and gave some away to some friends who used it more of a dare type things for people that came to their apartment, alas.

Mountain biking.

I agree.
It's one of those things that doesn't seem like it would be fun until you try it...the more you do it, the better it gets too.

I'll have to try it. I own a mountain bike actually, a nice one at that (my grandfather is a biking freak and buys whatever is the latest and greatest yearly, he gave me the bike I have in '00 that cost him $900 in '99). Anyway, I will have to try it out. I have only rode on roads and all and find it painfully stressful to dodge cars and make judgement calls on when and when not to "act like a pedestrian or act like a car". I have never rode on trails or anything like that. I used to ride my bike to the nearest town when I was in junior high every day in the summer (10 miles) then around town all day and that was good fun if I remember correctly.

And for everyone saying "workout", that isn't really something that takes a ton of time. I worked out the majority of the time when I was playing DAOC (all but this summer really). Three days a week for 1 hour isn't really what I'm looking for. I've been very into working out before, but honestly, you don't see any more results than normal by getting all obsessed with it. I'm looking for something big, something I come home and do for hours and hours every day. I want to be obsessed with something. If I could code better I'd jump into a sourceforge project, but I only know perl inside and out and am not really interested in coding things on a small scale that perl projects would necessitate (flame away!).

May I suggest:

1. Flipping out A LOT
2. Porking A LOT of hot women
3. Wailing HARD on guitar
4. Creating and eating VERY spicy chili
5. Designing and building TOTALLY awesome pillow forts in which to eat #4
6. Flipping out A LOT MORE

Why this is still funny, I do not know. But I laugh every single time. 😛

I work on old muscle cars and get paid hundreds of dollars.

Of course I have over twenty years of experince at this type of work.

I'm terrible with cars. I really wish that wasn't the case, but I am. One idea I had was buying an old car and trying to fix it up. I was going to try something really simple (cough, vw beetle) at first. How would say the best way to get into mechanical and/or body work?

I'm finally quitting DAOC (dark age of camelot, MMORPG) after a few years of playing. At first it was fun, then it really became an obsession, it took priority over pretty much everything else in my life (work/school/relationships/health). I quit 'officially' a couple of weeks ago (disconnected internet from my apartment). Now I am left with just a huge hole in my "productive" time. I've read several books in that time, but how is reading books any more beneficial than games?! I'm looking for a hobby that will actually benefit me or someone that I can really get obesessed with. I have been searching the web at work for a list or something, but can't find anything even close to an idea of what to do with myself. What do you do in your free-time that is not "just-a-waste-of-time"?

I dunno? girls? sex? fun?
all pretty effective in making you not miss games..
