They are Big 4, so you are working for 'creme' of the crop. I worked for another Big 4 and it was an interesting experience. I got the best training and job skills available, but their culture was a little too cultish for me. However, having Deloitte on your resume will open a LOT of doors that otherwise aren't going to open.

edit: I work with a lot of Deloitte consultants, and they are about the same as any of the Big 4.

wyvrn a few questions:

I would be moving from doing computer forensics in a gov enviroment into the the corporate world. Do you think it would be a big change?

Around what kind of pay range do the big four have for people with around 4 years exp?

Last question what are the hours like working for a Big 4 company?

Thanks

I'm very interested in computer forensics. How does one get started? I have a BS in IT w/ a 2nd discipline in Criminal Justice and would love to eventually pursue a career in this field. Is my only hope to get in w/ the FBI? What other opporunities are out there?

I'm working with another Big 4 right now and have been for about 2 years. The hours they keep are mandatory 45 per week, but most people don't even pull 40 on the slower weeks; however, when things are busy you'll easily see 60+ hours a week for many weeks at a time. I was pulling quite a few 80 and even 100 hour weeks there for a while.

Not sure if Deloitte is the same. I agree on the cult mentality; it's very much like that. Everything is about "the firm" and seeing who can most effectively screw who. Politics are thick, but if you can wade through the nonsense it's a great resume builder as he said.

Interviewed with them and my friend works for them. They pay a lot out of college and give good bonuses but the people I talked to didn't have a fvcking clue what was going on.

Daveman, I've done a lot of work with computer forensics in the last year, there are lots of opportunities for jobs in that field, it's literally exploding. I just went to a conference with secret service, FBI, local governments, etc and all of them said they were in desperate need... the typical backlog on cases is MONTHS. The FBI will give you the most rigorous training as it involves a lot of law/court experience as well. The more operating systems and SKILLS you have (ie not running tools) the easier it will be. Example, there is very little to nothing most local agencies can do about computer crimes with a UNIX-based OS.

a friedn worked for Deloitte many years ago. He left because he was tired of being sent from place to place non-stop. He literally had to have 2 suitcase packed at all times, because they would call at the drop of a hat and send him somewhere, and he would come home literally long enough to grab the second suitcase and leave again.

Are you talking about Deloitte & Touche Tohmatsu, the financial consulting company, or Deloitte Consulting, the tech consulting branch?

I was a contract employee for the latter. My experiences were mixed. I really liked all of the people save 2, which is a very good thing considering I worked there for a little over 5 years. However, I really had a lot of problems with the way they went about things, in that ultimately the bidding process and money almost always came before product quality. Many times I felt ethically conflicted because my client was the state, aka taxpayers were paying for stupid crap. Furthermore, I felt that some of the consultants were treated poorly in terms of the amount of work and expectations, even though the benefits and community were great.

But, one of the 2 people I didn't like was who ultimately drove me to look elsewhere. He was a young "hot shot". He was great in some ways, but he was the type that thought he knew everything even though his experience was largely in outdated systems. When I complained about the lack of a skilled web design team on a huge project that was costing taxpayers millions, he accused me of being lazy for wanting someone else to do my job [Edit: note my expertise is not in design, it's infrstructure, architecture, etc.. I was just "the best available" because their policies sucked]. That ultimately is the mentality.

So, great people with rare exceptions, bad policies, overall left a bitter taste in my mouth even though I really like many of my former coworkers and consider them friends.

I don't have much experience with the financial branch.

I answered the OP questions in PM and realized I hadn't mentioned that in this thread.

I recently worked with a Deloitte consultant who is doing an in-depth security audit for my company. He seemed both very nice, professional, and knowledgeable. So if their forensics people are anything like, then I would give them the thumbs up.

JOHNGALT99, do you mind telling us if you accepted the position?

I think Deloitte is a pretty good company to work for, but you have to enjoy the life style. I interviewed with them, but never got an offer (thankfully). Speaking from personal experience, I originally wanted to do consulting because all my friends made it sound cool. However, there was always a part of me that felt like I should stay an engineer.

Well, after working with Deloitte in setting up various events on campus, and interviewing with them, I found that their business and cut throat mentality isn't me. I am more of a guy who enjoys helping out people from behind the scenes. I'd much rather be the guy developing the next great technology for society. So you just also have to ask yourself what type of person you are, and if you fit into the company the consultant mentality. In addition to that, a lot of the people I met at Deloitte are great! However, they all have this mentality of "I'm the best at everything and will prove it." just isn't me, and I cannot let myself act that way around others.
