Why on earth did you go to the ER for that kind of problem? Yes, they charge big bucks for ER visits, did you not know that? They might work out a deal with you, can't hurt to ask. A relative of mine went to the ER and had her appendix removed. Bill: 10 grand. No insurance. She went and talked to the admin/billing people at the hospital and they wrote the whole thing off. Her total out of pocket: $25 for some lab fees. She got pretty lucky. Of course, if she didn't have the operation she'd have had MAJOR problems so they do take care of people who are uninsured. In your case though, you went for something you could have gone anywhere for (regular dr's office, pa, anything but the ER). I have no idea why people with non life threatening issues go to an ER, they will triage you to wait forever if you don't look like you're ready to keel over.
