Anyone have any experience with a Ford Contour SVT ?

They are one of the best cars Ford has released in the last 5 years. Good power (200hp) and nice suspension tuning makes for a good all-round car. The insurance rates aren't ridiculous either.

when i first saw one i was like contour SVT?!?!?!?!?!?! 😕

i looked it on the internet.. turns out it's a real car.. i thought that somebody slapped an SVT logo on a contour

but 0 experience... other than seeing one in a parking lot

lol yea contour doesnt seem like a car that svt would do, but there is something about it that i really like.

With the proper mods they can be blisteringly fast...

What I've personally experienced of them is that they have very comfy seats with lumbar and well they're sport seats 🙂 the stick shift is a little different than what I'm used to.. it sorta floats around.. :frown: also the damn things are ultra fast and fun to drive and I think that's understating how fun the car is..

I own one, so maybe you'd be interested in my opinion.

It's a great car, and I haven't regretted owning one yet...the only downside is the cupholders absolutely suck.

Aside from that, it's similar to a BMW 330i in terms of acceleration and handling (a little slower, but a little better handling. I haven't done any mods except a K&N filter, but I've been very pleased with it's performance.

And yes, the insurrance isn't bad. USAA doesn't charge me any more than a normal V6 Contour.

I love that car. Awesome styling, nice wheels, fast, handles like a champ, and makes me proud to see an American manufacturer do something right. I'd love to have that car.

Phunktion - what kind of mods would you recommend ? also what does " it sorta floats around" mean ?

BDawg - good to hear from an owner. also good to hear that insurance is good because that is a big part of my decision. thanks

I currently own a 2000 Black SVT Tour with under 15,000 miles on it, and for what I paid the car has been pretty much worth it.

You can go to The Ford Contour Website for more information, there are alot of enthusiasts there.

It handles decently (Although seems to have a little understeer and does not have the tightest turning radius).

A moderate amount of power, mostly once you start to ramp up in RPM's which is not like my old Mustang 🙂 which had alot of low end torque, but what do you expect from a higher revving 6cyl.

The interior is ok, there have been known problems with the Dashboard but there is a TSB out on it so it might be covered depending on the condition. (Dashboards have been known to warp near the heater vents).

The waterpumps like to go out at 60,000 miles, which is usually a bad thing...so if you get one you might want to just have it replaced at 50k..but again read those boards for more info.

The Power seat track on the drivers side has a little "play" in it even after being replaced on my car, and others have reported the same thing.

The Moonroof geartrain is known to fail after a rather short amount of use and is somewhat costly to fix.

The MTX 75 trannys that are in the cars are not the best and are known for hard shifting when "cold", also many have reported failures under 30,000 miles..but that could be linked to driving style. I know what is meant by "float around" as the gearshift just seems to be loose, however B&M does make a short throw shifter kit for the car, however I have heard that likes to break as well.

Aftermarket parts are rather limited and quite costly.

Other than that nothing really comes to mind....

I have only taken mine in for the power seat assembly, hard starting when I first fired it up in the morning (no idea though what causes that), and a heater blower motor which sounded like a cricket.

Hope that helped.

All in all it is a fun car to drive, and there aren't that many of them out there (Well here in DC they seem like they are everywhere, but not in other places I have been). I still wish I had gotten another mustang instead, but I can always do that again later.

Thanks a lot for the info, sounds like a lot of stuff can go wrong with it but i will just have to hope it doesnt happen to me if i get one. I guess stuff goes wrong with about every car out there.

Yes every car does have its problems....but the CSVT is a very fun car to drive. If you do get one I think you will enjoy it.

Bozack pretty much summed it up...

Last year, without any credit established, I tried to get one. Once I test drove one, I was just in love with the car and its attributes. Very, very well balanced car.

What year are you looking at? The '98s were actually weaker in terms of performance. They had a different flywheel and some other things that don't come to the top of my head, but it was 195hp/161ft lbs tq. The 99+ are all 200hp/164lbs tq.

Test drive it. Then see if they can pry you out of the drivers seat. 🙂

From a test track perspective, I can't put down the Contour SVT. Great performance (and that means more than just 0-60 figures) for the money

However, it is a typical Ford POS. I had a 1998 SE V6 5spd for about 2-1/2 years. It was generally fine the first year, but it just went down hill from there. The car was recalled 7 times for various problems. The electrical system was a nightmare and often the heater blower motor didn't work (TSB/recall didn't remediate). A couple of times the moonroof would not close nor would the power windows operate. The driver's seat had too much play and felt like it slid around on the track. The gearshift was a b!tch to use when cold and third gear is a bit weak...watch your synchros. Front rotors are easy to warp if you don't torque the lugnuts just perfectly. Ordinary bird crap ate through the paint in spots and the paint lost its lustre quickly despite prudent waxing. The butterfly valves sometimes would not open even under full throttle. The interior was full of rattles and squeaks and looks very downmarket with hard, shiny plastics. Little screw covers fell off (becoming lost of course), exposing screw heads in the cabin. Some of the roof trim came unglued. This was all on a car that I bought new and drove 29K miles. Fvck that...I drive an Accord now.

that sucks that a lot of things go wrong with it, but if i can find one i think ill get it if i can. i would be looking for a 98 because they are (from what ive seen) a lot cheaper.
