Anyone have any experience going to a live taping?

I have always wanted to go to a live taping of a show. I'm going to NYC in the spring and wanted to start looking into how to get tickets.

I thought about maybe something like Colbert or the Daily Show but both their sites just talk about Tickets Not Currently available.

How do these things usually work? Anyone have any experience scoring tickets?

I went to the taping of The Colbert Report once... a friend who works there got me tickets. I didn't know who was going to be on the show that day, but imagine my surprise when they announced that Brian Greene was going to be the guest!

I went to the Red Green show once. I'm pretty sure we didn't buy tickets in advance or anything, but I imagine it's pretty different for more popular shows.

Went to the Daily Show. Not hard to get tickets actually.

We waited outside for about 6 hours. Then got in, waited for another hour or so. And then they started.

They had a guy come out to loosen us up, he was pretty damn good. Then we had a Q&A session with Stewart, who really is a very funny guy in real life. And afterward we watched the show.

We didn't really get to see Stewart much during the taping itself cause we also watched through the TV's while they did the animations live and they had like 3-5 cameras blocking our view to Stewart

Good times.

Was hoping to skip the waiting in line part...

Good luck with that. 🙂

I have been to the Tonight Show and a taping of Married with Children. I would imagine all these things operate in roughly the same way.

First, getting tickets is only half the battle. Tickets are no guarantee that you will actually get in. They give out more tickets then they have room for because they want to place full and know some people will not show up.

The problem with this set up with a show that has guests is that how early you need to get to the show will depend on the popularity of the guest. Also, you have a wild card of a group showing up. When I went to the Married with Children taping I got there plenty early but on this particular day a group from Camp Pendleton showed up for the taping and before allowing the people in the regular line to enter, they allowed the Camp Pendleton group in first. Because of that, instead of being about mid pack, me and my friend were one of the last people allowed in from the line.

Unless you know someone, or want to risk not getting in, expect a lot of waiting in line.

I saw Colbert taped in Philly a while back. Hilary was on the show that day so there was a ton of security. Plus we had to wait around forever before getting in, I forget why (we had tickets from a student lottery thing already).

I've been to four so far for tv shows. All super long and most parts were boring since they have to do multiple takes for the shows.
