The sound of the flint wheel, burning of the oversized flame and (finally) the loud snap of the cap closing for final extinguishing is classic indeed.

Using one with a wet thumb or around water is a no-no though. Once the flint wheel gets wet no spark big enough to light the wick is possible.

I have to fill my Zippo every week. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing. That's how often to have to fill them if you use them. Mine would last 7 complete days, and a little bit, so I filled it every week, usually on a Friday. That way if I went out(most likely on weekends), the lighter would be full, and ready for extra use.

I have one that has a circuit board design all over it. I just make sure I top it off before I plan to use it or take it somewhere.

I've carried zippo lighters for close to 40 years. I agree with those who say they're a PITA...They need to be refilled at least every couple of weeks...and if you overfill them, then stick them in your pocket....OUCH! The fluid always leaks and you get a chemical burn from the naptha.
However, I prefer them to a butane lighter. Nearly windproof, and they work well, even at sub-zero temps when a butane lighter won't.

We went to Hawaii 5 or so years ago...right after they decided that you couldn't carry lighters on planes anymore...and lost a zippo that I'd carried for 20+ years. the "We'll ship it for you" place at the airport was closed, and we had parked in an off-site parking facility. They wouldn't allow me to remove the wick and wadding, thus rendering safe...my only choice was to toss it. :(

Aw, man. That's fucked up. I feel your pain. I used an expensive($50) refillable electronic butane lighter for about 5 years until I think someone stole it. I figured it would probably last just about forever. Never make a man part with his fire-making device. :( That's vacation ruining territory! lol
