I really need to get some kind of fence for my new dog. She is growing and by this summer/fall will be full size and want to run a lot. I was considering an invisible fence, but I'm not sure how well they work. Does anyone have them, and if so, do you recommend it?

By the way my dog is a golden retriever, if that makes any difference.

It all depends on how stubborn your dog is. We had two pitbulls with an electric fence. They would walk up, get shocked, yelp for a second, then realize it doesn't hurt that bad and walk over the fence. :)

Couple friends of mine had one put in recently. Their dog was rarely ever outside before, so when the new fence was put in they let her loose. She immediately darted for the road, passed the fence, and started yelping. Came running back to the porch and would not go any further than the front porch anytime she was let outside in the next week.

i'm kinda nervous about it, because the next road over is a US highway that has a fair amount of traffic going 55-65mph. It would be disaster if she did get out and ran out there.

I would say if you really love your dog, don't take a chance on the electric fence and fork out the money for a real fence.

I installed one a few years ago for the family beagle at my parents house. Beagles are one of the harder dogs to contain, since they tend to track things till they either find them or lose the scent.

I bought this one (from this company):

http://www.petstreetmall.com/Outdoor-Containment/3973/481/

The installation took about half a day - but I think we ran 1500 feet of wire at least. I borrowed an underground cable installer and mounted it on the three-point hitch of my Dad's tractor. We went around the yard once without the wire in it to break up any roots or anything we'd run into, then stuck the wire in and went around again. Once that was done, we went around a third time, driving on the "seam" to close it up. It did a great job and you couldn't even tell we did anything in most places. About 1/4 of the fence required hand digging, which is why it took so long.

The fence itself works really well. The beagle learned it very quickly and has only ever gotten out once. That was because my Dad cut the wire when digging for something else, all the dog did was come sit on the back deck and beg for food at the door :D.

If you buy a fence from them, don't get extra wire from them if you need it. Get it from Home Depot or Lowes, it's WAY cheaper.

Highly reccomended. The beagle LOVES being out in the yard. We usually chain him up every now and then so the collar doesn't rub his neck raw.

If you carefully train your dog and it doesn't have territory issues, then the invisible fence is a marvelous thing.

They work great for some dogs and not well for other dogs. It really comes down to YOU. YOU must train the dog. Once trained they worked awesome for us. Well, for 3 of our 4 dogs. Huskies are too stubborn to be detered by a shock. But it works great for our labs and golden. But I say again, you must train the dogs and that can take a couple weeks to a month.

agreed, you definitely need to train your dog and not just to abide buy boundary restrictions. it's hard work to get a dog to behave, but it pays off in the long run.

btw, my g/f has an electric fence installed for her golden retriever and german shepard. it works great for both of them, but then again they're very well behaved animals.

We've had one for a few years now. Like others have said, training is the key. The shock isn't really bad enough to deter most dogs from crossing the fence - its just a reminder to the dog that you don't want them to go any further. Our dog hasn't crossed the fence in about 4 years.

for our german shepherd, we installed "dogwatch". the CEO of dogwatch personally came down to our house and "trained" our dog for it. pretty cool.

Beautiful dogs. I especially like the dark chocolate one.
