I am trying to use the additional usbs via the usb header they provide. Do I need additional hardware to set it up? Thanks

Ok I tried to connect it to mobo via red and black plug and ribbon cable. When I powerd up, the red and black wire started smoking profusely..... Thankfully the system appears to be unharmed.. Any ideas ?

You are not being specific about your problem. You need to give more info.

The mobo has 2 usb ports on the back plus 2 ports on the board (if I remember correctly) to add 4 extra ports. It comes with 2 extras that fit in a pci slot on the back. You just plug it in. Theres nothing to it and nothing on it that should smoke. The connector is pinned so it won't even let you plug it in backwards.

Yes, I did not have any problem installing mine. Just plugged into the appropriate header. There was definately NO smoke.

Are you sure you plugged it into the correct header? and not a fan header...:Q

I hope you did NOT damage the motherboard.

Keep us filled in.

I abandoned trying to get extra usb ports to work. The on-board ones are working, but they shut off randomly.... Well, I think there may be a short in the usb ports. I think I will have to buy a pci card with usb on it... DAMN !

the problem of unstable USB ussually comes from the crappy 4 in 1 VIA, try to update with the new 4 in 1. About the smokes from your usb pin, it means you've burned it,... I did this before, surely it's because you plug in them in a wrong setting.

My experience with the extra usb was when ever I plugged in the extra usb header in, my machine becomes unstable. So i never bothered with them.

Hi

I have the same board, and I have run windows 98/me/xp on it with all 4usb ports working fine, although I did find 1 device that when plugged in to the USB port caused lock ups, this was a 5 in 1 card readerf purchased form SCAN.

Other stuff I have...
Canon N656u USB Scanner, Samsung 5 in 1 card reader, digital camera, usb memory stick, MS usb mouse, IBM usb keyboard, 4 port USB hub.

I would guess that you have damaged the Mobo, or that it was faulty from the start?
