Anything smaller than a border collie is a rat dog with a lousy temper. :) Except Shi-Tzu's, I've never met a mean Shi-Tzu. Honestly though, small dogs tend to be very one family dogs and protective. I think because they're small they feel threatened easier and in my experience have more of a tendency to react defensively. Whatever you get, I hope you like your new pet.
[Disclaimer] I actually have little experience with toy poodles; this is just an observation of small dogs in general [/Disclaimer]

A toy poodle?! Are you effin kidding me? Hose that damn thing down, shove a mop handle in its, um, rear sector, and polish the floors.
That's about all they're good for.

My daughter's pottery instructor has a mixed poodle/bichon frise, he's a pretty small dog so I'm guessing it's toy poodle it's mixed with, and he's a nice little fellow, very lively too.

Why not get a live dog of some kind. A stuffed animal is a nice toy for decorrating with, but it just sets there and looks nice.

...Let me check my Toy box..........Nope!:p

As with any pure bread, check and recheck it's lineage! Many of the older breeds have been 'puppy-milled' and inbread so much that genetic defects are commonplace.

Once you get it, regardless of that, you will fall in love. So please be VERY careful making your choice.

I would'nt recommend a Toy Poodle if you have small children or other larger dogs.

Growing up eons ago, my mom had three miniature poodles over time. Every one was smart as hell. They didn't bark at every little thing, but they didn't get caught off guard either. They don't shed, since they have fur instead of hair. Not much more I can say about 'em, and I don't know if that holds true for the toys.

Edit:

Holy crap, let me introduce you to my sister-in-law's dog! I want to kill that little sh!t-zu :| She snaps at everybody including family members. God, I hate that dog and I can't believe they even keep it. Funny thing is, her offspring are great. Don't know WTF happened to her!

Had one when I was a kid..

It always had seizures...

My boss has one now, and it also has seizures..

The vet said that even pure-bred toys are inbread and the seizures are the result..

One of my best friends in HS had a Toy Poodle (purebred). The blasted thing was nucking futs, to use his terminology. The dog was very friendly, but I would never put up with something so insane, it was like a wind up toy that never wound down. At least it didn't bark a lot.

Ok I don't know exactly what size a toy poodle is.. but my sister has a "normal" poodle (I guess... you know.. he's like... small dog sized <laugh>) and he's cool. Poodles are smart dogs, but they all have their own attitude. If you get a fun one, you're fine. Hers happens to be rotten to the core, in a dennis the menace kind of way. He likes to grab the TV remote control and run around the house with it...

Pic of fluffy: http://www.fiendation.com/olympus/favorite/fluffy1.jpg

Edit: Ok, I guess fluffly may be a miniature poodle, which is bigger than a toy. The distinction appears to be Toy: under 10" tall at shoulder, Miniture: 10-15" at shoulder, Standard: 15"+. Those "monster poodles" that are like 30 inches tall scare the hell out of me, it's just not right.

I also have a miniature poodle (not a toy). She's very well-tempered, and almost a perfect pet. She was also easy to house-train.

One thing you should know, though. Since they don't shed, their hair grows to excessive lengths so every 2-3 months or so you will need to get them clipped.

One of my best friends has 2 of them - Sparky and Quicksilver. :D
They are both certifiably insane. They cost a lot to groom and keep pretty. Get something that's not produced from generations of inbreeding mutants. (FYI, the "toy" gene is an artificially harvested mutation)

Go to your local animal shelter and get a dog that NEEDS a home; save a life. :)
