Anyone have a split oven? (dual ovens in a single unit)

Oven crapped out. I'd like dual ovens, but no room. Next best thing is this beast. I did check it out in-person at Home Depot tonight...my only concern is whether or not the smaller oven sizes would affect cooking times, dryness, etc. Reviews seem good. Not sure I want to spend a grand+ on an oven though, when regular ones are half the price.

Yes, top oven is smaller, bottom oven has convection. Burners on the stove top are gas, ovens are electric (dual fuel.) It's awesome. Both ovens with broil or toast. Top oven is perfect for cookies, pizza, etc.

Yeah, I was thinking about running gas since there's already gas in the rental, but I'm only in this place until December or so & my wife really wants a flat-top electric for convenient right now. But I do a lot of cooking & I'm responsible for the appliances, so I can pony up an extra $500 for a split oven or just get a run-of-the-mill flat-top for $600:

In my first house we had a 1950-60's gas split stove. It had 6 burners (one gridle type one) and 2 stoves. one full size adn one half size. they were side by side.

I loved that stove. it was just fucking amazing. i have not had anything close to it since then.

kinda like this! but mine was yellow!

I have one and would get another one. Mostly use the small one.
I don't think the small one cooks as evenly though.

I had the flat induction top for about 6 months and hated it. Hard to clean, uneven heating, took FOREVER to get to temp.

Basically, get gas. It is the optimal method for generating heat.

I have one. I often use the top as a toaster oven to reheat food quickly.

Have it; hate it.

I love ovens, because <italian born> and these are the three things i look for:

1) Gas.
Electric is bs*. Electric ovens aren't ventilated the way gas ovens are, and simply don't work the way gas ovens do. You cant do good pizza in an electric.
2) Big.
preferably with a top grill, but i can live without that. big enough that i can fit a stone in it.
3) top-mount.
Not really a deal breaker, but it makes it SOOO much easier to keep it clean if it's at chest height, instead of having to kneel down to grab stuff.

stuff i dont care about.
multiple cooking modes (like regular+ convection), timers, digital control.

I read through a bunch of reviews and there were some mixed ones about that, so I ended up going with a single oven. If I ever get the opportunity, I'll just do dual full-sized wall ovens. I do have gas in this place (water heater) and I wanted a gas cooktop, but since I'm not here permanently & my wife wanted a flat-top electric, I opted for that (no extra work required for installation either!).

The buying experience on Home Depot's website was fantastic. I read through some reviews and selected a basic flat-top non-induction non-split oven for $549. They do free delivery, free hookup, and free haul-away. You do have to buy a new cord ($22), but when I went to check out, it automatically applied a $50 rebate (I tried a $10 off coupon from RetailMeNot.com, but it was only one or the other).

So with tax, it came up to $554.04, which is a lot better than the $1100 split model I was looking at (as far as surprise housing expenses go, bleh!). The website handled scheduling & they had a free date for this Wednesday, so basically 2-day shipping haha. Best part is, I just checked out with Paypal & didn't even have to create an account! They've made it entirely too easy. Here's the one I went with:

From what I've read online, you need some waxy flat-top range cleaner & a razor blade to keep the surface clean.

We bought a samsung split oven a couple of years ago that has a divider you can remove to convert it into a single normal size oven. Best of both worlds for us and have had no problems at all. Knock on wood.

We have a split, use the top oven for toasting or average baking duties, bottom for the major cooking and stuff.

Unfortunately you can't toast when the bottom is in bake. But you can run two bakes side by side

When I said I would get another one, I meant I would never get a single again but to each his own. I would rather have a split over 2 full size wall ovens. I like the small oven because preheats quickly.

I don't think we've ever had to resort to razor blades for cleaning but do use "special" glass top cleaner.

Ah, gotcha. I ended up (finally) snagging a pellet grill with the remaining budget, so we're both happy - she got her flat-top & I got my smoker-grill :D

That's the exact type we have, also a Samsung.

What happens why you have to cook something really big like a turkey? Buddy of mine has one of those and it doesn't look like a bird bird would fit.

I can fit a very large bird in my bottom section. I've done a ~15lb turkey and it fit easily, I doubt a 20lb monster would be a problem.

The smaller top part is great because there's no need to heat up a large space for smaller things. Especially in the summer when we don't want to heat up the kitchen too much.

I agree with this. I use the top (smaller) oven a lot more than the larger, bottom oven area.

It is also awesome to be able to cook two different things at the same time like a pumpkin pie and a turkey or baked potatoes and prime rib.

The bottom oven on mine is the same size as a regular oven.

This. Most single cavity ovens end up using some space on the bottom for a drawer or maybe a broiler that these double-cavity ovens use for two fully functional oven spaces.
