Are the S-VHS connections "pass-through" , like the the coaxial cable ones?

Or, do they only work when the VCR is on and
TV/VCR set to VCR [like the RCA connectons]

I'm not sure if all brands would work the same way...
I'm looking at a JVC model.

Don't do it man...let the primitive magnetic storage die. Get a damn DVD player!!
If you already have one, disregard this statement ;)

Mine passes the co-ax when off or playing to channel 3 on the TV. (via co-ax)

S-VHS only active with VCR on/playing and proper input on TV selected.

Hope this is what you are asking and helps.

When the VCR is off, the s-video out is dead.

When it is on, 1 of 3 things:

-playing a tape: outputs the tape signal (duh)
-not playing a tape, source set to "line": outputs the incoming s-video signal
-not playing a tape, source set to a channel: outputs the channel

"It's a Sony"

Ok, ok.. I know VCR tapes are not the best method
of archiving video..Yes, DVD-R looks sweet, but its mad expensive,
and not supported in standalone DVD players, yet.
As for TiVo, what do you do when your harddrive is full?
Its like having a VCR, but only able to use 10 tapes your whole life.

DVD recorders exist now :p

That's why i said disregard this statement if you own a DVD player because then I'd assume it was for recording. Dumbass. :p

Were you thinking you could chain your devices? Like, DVD into VCD into TV?

You can, but to watch DVD, the VCR would have to be on, and set to LINE...

Easier to just get a switch (or use a receiver--but that is more money)
