can I remove the coaxial cable input and use an external antenna to get OTA analog channels?

how well does this work?

Depends entirely on your antenna and location.

I'm in San Antonio and will be located in the middle of a soccer field.. currently, the antenna is a set-top with rabbit ears, and it terminates into a coax connection.

But, I could buy a new one if need be.

If you can get them on your TV, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get them on a capture card... You could, I dunno, try it? Crazy idea, I know. 😉

I have a PVR250 and attached it to the over the air antenna and it worked like crap, i bought an amplified antenna and it worked slightly better but still got a bit pixelated. So it'll work but the picture quality will suck i believe.
